Everything but the plugs

Our F150 is 2WD and has the 4.6 Triton. I have been overall pleased with this motor. It has enough pep to haul me, my pianos, and my piano trailer once or twice a week. When it pulls a trailer I can count on about 14 mpg. Not loaded about 18 and up to 21 even. I pulled a car trailer and an old car home from Montana and it did great! My only gripe is the plugs. I didn't have one blow but had symptoms and took it in and had plugs, wires, the whole shoot and match for about $900. I didn't want to take the chance of blowing a head. If you don't catch that stuff, it sounds like real trouble.

Bought this truck in 02 with 55,000 miles, great looking, still get compliments. Runs great, 200,000 mi, only changed one coil pack and 2 alternators. Some cold weather knock as of late but thats been all. Very happy and will stay with Ford, although never had Chevy truck trouble either. 4WD works great, tows good, breaking with trailer less than optimal as rear drum breaks are on this truck.

Overall good truck had a few glitches

4 speed auto tranny slips and clunks when shifting up a hill on occasion.. Replaced fuel pump, serpentine belt pulley and adjustor mechanism. Major brake issues were solved after 10 yrs. old after $2,000 spent. Heater air conditioner temperature control replaced. Had leaking rear slider window replaced. Still got original spark plugs and coils on engine. Since my last review the alternator had to be changed out to a new one. The bearings went out. No more squeals or whining sounds from engine compartment. To give this truck more power and acceleration I recommend a cat back Flowmaster exhaust system be installed! I had a one into 2 muffler exhaust from Walker installed. Also installed a K&N air filter. Greatly improved the acceleration of the V-6. I love the engine sound! But I do love the ride, comfort in the cab with ample head room. I bought this truck new in Nov. 1998 for $22,000 even though I had glitches I like the truck overall I have a cap on the bed and do no towing; just light hauling every now and then. My F-150 is around 21 years old now and still going strong. I often think of the newer pick up trucks today with price stickers well over $50,000 and all the gadgets and complicated bells and whistles that I don't need and want. Keep it simple! My local car and truck garage keeps this truck well tuned and it is such a pleasure to ride in it so smooth with the Michelin truck tires. I do use a new and updated Garmin G.P.S. which adds a much needed driving tool for me. Update: My 22 yr. old truck is still chugging along very reliably and I am very happy with that. We used it as a, "second vehicle" when our No. 1 vehicle was in the shop for a couple of repairs. For two weeks we depended on it while we got a tranny replaced in our car. With a 22 year old pick up truck starting up every time and being reliable for us, how more reliable and dependable comments can we say about it? That is a testimony in itself for the F-150! Mechanically, I had an issue with the rear driver's side door that wouldn't open after it was closed. An internal cable latch fitting broke and a new assembly was installed by my local auto mechanic. There have been no electrical issues since my first review that I can think of. The V-6 runs fine and the maintenance I have done to it over the years had been a huge reward for me. And the $70,000 or so pickups I see on the market place with all the confusing gadgets and systems at my age, I just shake my head. I would rather have my simplified and basic F-150 Ford! And when I look at the original window sticker that I saved, I am amazed at the options and items I got. And the gas mileage specs back then compared to today's standards aren't really that much different in the way I use my truck. Trucks that drive themselves or park themselves are not for me! I'd rather have my hands on the wheel and my eyes on the road. That is the way it's always been and should be going forward I believe. UPDATE: Getting the truck and cap repainted with the original deep wedgewood blue. Passenger side power window not going up and down. That pushbutton is located on the driver's side door. Passenger side window would not operate. OK now. My original review describes my truck's current condition that Edmond's posted in the original review. Update: I got the F-150 back from the paint shop and she looks cherry! Now another situation cropped up and it was amazing my mechanic caught this. I was experiencing a miss in the 4.2 motor and upon troubleshooting he discovered 4 out of 6 sparkplugs were in real bad shape. I had him replace all new Motor Craft ignition parts, coil assemblies, plug wires and spark plugs. It was amazing to me that these were all original parts and lasted 24 years and 70,000 miles! That was amazing and shows how long genuine Ford parts last and work. Truck runs much better now! Now my truck is 24 years old, I would like to update the Michelin truck tires. I put a new set of Michelin truck tires on her (boy have the prices of tires gone up!) from BJ's and then took it for a test drive. It rode very smooth, and the tires really were gripping the road very nicely. It was really worth every penny to upgrade the tires.

My truck has the 4.2 V6. For towing you definetly need the V8. The good news is my fuel economy is 19.7 on the freeway and 15.5 city. Not bad for a full size truck. Very reliable to drive and very comfortable for a familly of 4 when traveling. I would tell anyone to buy one for a second or even a first familly vehicle.

Great truck overall, it may not have the power or ride of the newer truck but in brute reliability this truck has done me well. Its a truck with a 2v 5.4 so good mileage is not a goal to reach for but I can hit 15 mpg if I baby it. In terms of power it still has lots of get up and go and will easily pull my 7900lb car carrier in the hills of Kansas. On maintenance it can be hard to do somethings like change out plugs because of how tight the engine bay is but otherwise its a good way for a beginning DIY person to learn how to work on a truck. The interior is in my experience indestructible save for the cloth seats which are a wear item anyway. I will never have a truck without Vinyl floors.
