2003 Ford Explorer XLT AWD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

We bought the Explorer for its 4WD
capabilities, but we were surprised how
nice it is to drive around town.

It is great for driving in town and
short errands. We've taken it on the
highway a few times, and like it on the
highway.

It is great in the snow.

Best Features

I like the low "lift" to get things through the rear window.

Vehicle

2003 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

I like the fact that seven people can
fit comfortably. I like the overall
exterior design. I love the built-in
tether strap restaints. The interior
could use some work. Easier steering
wheel tilting to make getting in and
out easier would be nice. Third row
could use a little more foot room. The
seats are all very deep. I am 5'3" and
I find it very difficult to make myself
comfortable in the driver's seat. My
back hurts whenever I travel long
distances. And what happened to storage
area!? I can just fit in my
groceries.

Best Features

The sporty exterior design is very nice. I also like the anti-theft system and the automatic lights. The roomy 2nd row seat is a big plus. I especially like the the safety restraints for my children. I feel they are very safe in this vehicle.

Worst Features

The third row area could use some more leg room. More storage area would also be very convinient. The tilt steering column does not adjust enough to allow easy exit and entry.

2003 Ford Explorer XLT Rwd 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

I owned an F150 prior to my Explorer
purchase. I love the size not too big
and not too small. Perfect!

Best Features

3rd Row Seat, AC/heater in 2nd & 3rd row seat. With kids are hotter or colder than you this eliminates that problem

Worst Features

Handle of some sort for the rear hatch, I don't like fingerprints all over my vehicle

2003 Ford Explorer NBX 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

This is my 1st new trcuk so I am not a
great judge of new vehicles. I am very
happy with the size of the vehicle, it
has plenty of storage and with the NBX
rack and net on the top you can just
throw your Christmas tree up there and
head home. I love the upright seating
and view of the road, and the look of
the 17 inch wheels and tires add to my
positive review.

Best Features

Puddle lights for my wife, especially on uneven surfaces, the key pad door access you can't live without (I think only Ford) and that nice red color. The NBX package rack for my toys and the 2" tow package reciever.

2003 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

I had a 1996 EB which I absolutely
loved. It had every amenity I needed
and none that I didn't. At 160,000
miles and counting I decided to trade
it for a 2003. Big disappointment.
Granted I went from an EB to an XLT but
the interior looks really cheap. The
tires are loud and the third row seats
are a huge waste of cargo space.
Mileage is a joke at nearly $60/week.
Mostly though there are huge blind
spots that require you to drive well
using only your mirrors. I'm already
looking to trade it in. Last but not
least who thought of moving the gas
tank to the passenger side. Obviously
someone without children. Big safety
issue.

Best Features

Good looking exterior.

Worst Features

Move the gas tank back to the driver's side. Make seats more comfortable. Provide option to eliminate third row seating.
