2001 Dodge Neon - commuters-only car
By Kensey on

2001 Dodge Neon Highline SE 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Overall, this is a decent car, but a bit
expensive for its type ($600 for a
three-speed automatic? Come on,
Dodge). This model has had at least one
recall, on the brakes, so be *sure*
yours has had the recall work done (the
recall issue can lead to total brake
failure while stopping). It gets good
city fuel economy, not-so-good (but
still OK) highway, and the cabin is a
bit cramped if you're taller than 5'8".
This is a car for the commute to work,
not the road trip to Washington. Very
distinctive style, you'll either love
the look or hate it.

Best Features

The dash layout is pretty good (but see below for caveats). Nice CD changer, never heard it skip even in rough driving.

Worst Features

Tires should be wider for better traction. Steering-wheel layout a pain, e.g. dome-/dashlight control on inside of left stem. Needs more footroom both front and back -- trips over 20 minutes are painful for tall people. Rear deck so high it obstructs visibility of objects close to rear.
