These people do not care about their customers
I bought a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 at this dealer in July 2015. When I purchased the car, I spent $1500 extra on a warranty that they offered. I love my car, and had no problems with it until last week when I had a check engine light. I brought it to an indy mechanic who diagnosed it as a bad oxygen sensor, and needing an ecu reflash which only the Mazda dealer can do. I brought my car to sport durst mazda, and they agreed. They called the warranty company to file the claim, and the warranty company informed them that southern states volkswagen has a clause in the warranty contract that all work must be performed by southern states volkswagen, but since it was a mazda and could only be serviced by a mazda dealer for this repair, southern states could call the warranty company and authorize sport durst to do the work. I called southern states volkswagen, and asked them to do so. I spoke with deborah, and she refused. She said I had to bring the car in to them. I explained that the car was already at sport durst, and a mazda dealer needed to do the work so they would have to send it to sport durst to do the work anyway even if I did bring it in to them and that the warranty company said if they just called and authorized it, sport durst could do the work. She didn't seem to care, and insisted that I had to bring it to them. She asked for the name of who I spoke to at sport durst, and said she would call them and get back to me. She called back about 15 minutes later and again insisted that I had to bring the car to them. I left work early to go pick my car up from sport durst, and bring it to southern states volkswagen, even though Deborah had admitted that ultimately sport durst (where my car already was) would be doing the work. I arrived at southern states, and gave then my keys and asked for a loaner car.i was refused, and I asked to speak with the most senior person working at the time, a man named frank. Frank was by far the most condescending unsympathetic person I have ever spoken to. He did not care that they were aggressively wasting my time in making me bring my car to them, and then stated that 'loaners are for volkswagen customers.' I bought my car from them, I am a volkswagen customer. My sister, who gave me a ride, bought a new jetta from them 6 months previously. She pointed this out, and his response was 'yeah, but this is his car.' He wanted to have me take my car home, and wait until sport durst had the parts in 3 days later to give me a loaner after I took an afternoon off work to bring my car to them at their insistence. I refused, and just brought my car back to sport durst and am just paying them for the $1000 repair out of pocket because Frank was such a prick. And you know what? Sport durst gave me a loaner, no problem even though they didn't have the parts in. To sum up, I would rather pay $1000 out of pocket than pay a $100 deductible to have my car fixed, because the people at southern states wasted my time and were offensively condescending. It's clear that these people do not care about their customers, and I would caution anyone looking to purchase or have a vehicle serviced by them. Go to sport durst, they will treat you like a human being.

Great place to buy a car
I wanted to say what a pleasant experience it was buying a car from Southern States Volkswagen. Sam Williams was a great salesman - no pressure, just helpful and accommodating. He even stayed late one night so my wife could take a test drive. Chavis Rachel made the paperwork painless, so we were off driving our new (used) car rather than sitting in an office. I would definitely consider coming back to Southern States the next time I'm in the market for another car.
Go to Southern States and ask for Patrick!
This was the least painful and most pleasant car buying experience of my life! I hate buying cars, and I typically do not like car salesmen. But Patrick and the team at Southern States Automotive took great care of us. We really appreciate Patrick's great attitude and no pressure approach. He just treated us like friends, understood what we were looking for and helped us find it within our budget. Even after the sale was complete, Patrick went above and beyond and sat in the dark to help us connect our iPhones to the car for calls and music. The next time we are ready to shop for a car, I know where we'll be going and who we will be asking for! A million thanks!!
Sheila B + VW= AWESOME!!!
When I first walked in the dealership I was a little nervous, being it was my first time handling this type of situation. I walked in looking for Sheila B, who I was referred to from a friend. As we set down she asked a few questions to see actually what I wanted to do today. Being that I wasn't really sure she didn't make me feel as if she did not care. I field out the application, needed a co-signer, without one I wouldn't have been able to move forward. She gave me so many options to make sure I was going to be able to leave her happy. I walked out with a 2007 VW Passat. As a college student I was super pleased. Everyone keep a smile on and were helpful. I glad I came in today.
Ms. Sheila B is the Best!
Ms Sheila B really help me to understand the meaning of purchasing a car, she was very passionate about what she does, and i would refer her to anyone that wants to buy a car. VERY GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE
Very positive experience
I had a very positive experience at Southern State of Durham. Sheila B did everything in her power to ensure that I left in the vehicle of my choice! The staff was very friendly all around, which was an added bonus.
My Husband and I had a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport that we traded in because it was giving us a lot of problems. At first we were skeptical because we didn't want to pay anymore car notes but after much prayer and talking things through we finally decided that it was best for us to buy a new car! Mrs. B was there for us along the way and she made sure that we got what we needed! I can truly say that she loves her job and will go out of her way to help you! We are really happy with her service and will be recommending her to everyone we know!!! :)
We in the recent days have experienced some family medical hardships and learned we would be needing to travel on a weekly basis to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital for treatment in regards to my wife's health. We wanted to purchase a well rounded family car that could help us with our travels. After extensive search for an awesome car. We came to Southern States Volkswagen of Durham. We got here and were treated very well by all the staff members, especially the following members of Southern States Volkswagen of Durham: Anthony V, Mgr., Mitch W, Mgr. and Penn our Salesman. They all work very hard to help us with everything that we needed and gave us a great price for our new family car. During these trying times the Southern States Volkswagen of Durham truly went out of their way to make our wishes come true. So with our sincerest thanks we would like to acknowledge this dealership as one of the best we have ever worked with and we will continue to come to them for services and recommend them to everyone we know. This is has been by far one of the best experiences we have had with working closely with a dealership. As they work hard to accomodate us they have shown us honesty, compassion an amazing customer service. We are very thankful for coming to this dealership and it is a place everyone should come to get well serviced. Thank you so much for everything! Sincerely, Santos Family
2014 Jetta TDI
n October 2013, I decided to turn over my 2003 Jetta TDI to my daughter and purchase a new Jetta TDI for myself. After visiting two VW dealerships, my husband and I were thoroughly impressed with our Internet Salesperson, Keith H' level of knowledge and flexibility. He is the only salesperson we had dealt with who was able to answer any question we had regarding the mechanics and options available to us. That alone was a slam-dunk in convincing us to purchase our Jetta at Southern States. Keith was also able to give us a great deal in the purchase of the vehicle. Even though we had to wait a little over 3 months for the delivery of the car, it was well worth it. I love my new Jetta and am looking forward to keeping it as long as my 2003, which now has 285K miles and going strong!
Great sales reps
Sales rep and Managers all did a great job showing me my options. Sales rep took me out for a test drive in a sleeting rain, and after my third trip to SSVW I am happy to be the new owner of a GLI! Could offer water or coffee earlier for creature comforts (picky I know), but otherwise great service.
Artur and the rest of the sales team were great and went the extra mile to get the exact vehicle I wanted, and worked with me on pricing. Love my new Jetta.
Best Deal Ever
In my lifetime I have had at least fifty cars and dealt with hundreds of dealers. I have never been treated with as much honesty and professional behavior as I have experienced at Southern States Volkswagen in Durham, N.C. Keith H, Mitch W, and Jessica E were just marvelous while helping me with my decision to buy a new Beetle. Not only was I shown the utmost respect, but I saved well over a thousand dollars in the process. It was truly the best buying experience I have ever had at a car dealership. Dave B of Cary, NC
Worst sales encounter EVER!
Not planning to buy a car that day, my wife & I walked in and were greeted by a pleasant young salesman. After talking with him for about 10 minutes, he returned accompanied by another salesman who was pushy and rude. (The first salesman was relatively new, so the dealership may have wanted to get their experienced salesman to close a deal that day.) The second salesman took over, we lost our original pleasant salesman, and we agreed to a test ride. When we returned, and after some pressure to buy that day, suddenly the sales manager appeared, again without even offering an explanation as to why he was getting involved. He was slick, smiling excessively, and was the personification of slippery smooth car sales people. We soon left the dealership and when I called the next day (as I had promised to do) the sales manager told me that a lower trim level car had everything but Navigation that a premium trim level car had. I later checked this on the web and learned that it was definitely not true. I called back to convey my displeasure and disappointment at having been lied to and stating that I would not be buying a car from them. Later, he called back and left a message stating he was sorry and that he and his manager wanted to extend a $2,500 discount for any car on their lot! I declined to do business with these people in spite of their offer. The 2nd salesman offered no explanation of why he was taking over for the first one; but the sales manager was the worst part of the encounter. My wife described him as "icky" and "creepy" and I think that says it all. [non-permissible content removed] are not good business partners.
Great sales and management staff
I was contacted within an hour of submitting a request for quote from Edmunds. The sales manager called me, not just a rep. He and I worked together to find the combination of styles, features and colors for the model I wanted. I wanted a VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI, and it is a popular car. I wanted a manual transmission, which lessened my choices considerably. But they worked hard and searched all over to find me a car that was close to what I started looking for, and I got one that was perfect in all the important things. Not the color I was hoping for, but that is just an availability thing, and I didn't wish to order it special. I was given a very good price right from the beginning, and did not have to work to get a price I liked, they offered. The entire staff was friendly and knowledgable, and took time to speak with me. I would recommend them to anyone looking to purchase a VW in the Triangle.
First and last-time customer: Work neutral, service poor
I had my broken A/C fixed on my 8-year-old Golf GLS while visiting the area from out-of-state. If you expect full disclosure and transparency, detailed paperwork, or service that is intended to minimize the inconvenience to the customer, this is not the place for you! Diagnosed a costly problem with no paperwork to back-up the results. Promised diagnosis and repair would be fixed in a single morning if dropped off and took all day. Then, had to wait another hour for paperwork to be finished and point out where my car was (already out front and ready to go when I arrived). Cashier charged me for the full amount, instead of the remaining 50%, and then blamed her error on someone else. She also pressed me to complete a credit-card form that the service manager already said was unnecessary. A/C works now, but I wish I'd waited until I got home to patronize a dealership that I know. However, it was over 95 degrees that week and I had another 11-hour drive ahead of me - brutal without A/C. This is a dealership of last resort!
