Poor Experience: Faulty Vehicle; Flawed Processes; Broken Commitments

Believing their website promise of “friendly service, precise attention to detail,” we selected Sheehy Ford Richmond for purchase of our new 2021 Ford Explorer. Our experience was horrible. We drove eight hours just to purchase from Sheehy. Sheehy delivered us a vehicle with a failed major system, an inaccurately represented odometer reading, and made us pay a premium (fee) for tax, titling, and registration services which provided no added value. What we did receive for seeking out Sheehy Ford Richmond was inconvenience, aggravation, and the worst vehicle/dealer experience we’ve ever had. Everything started to go downhill as soon as we arrived to pick up the vehicle. To start with, our final written quote, from the day we placed the deposit, listed the odometer as reading 10 miles; when we turned on the Explorer, it showed 30 (a 200% overage!). Two days after we picked up the vehicle, the weather warmed up and we could not get cool air from the air conditioning. It was Saturday and we were still in the area, so we immediately took it to the nearest Ford dealer (not Sheehy). Though we had purchased the SUV at a competing dealer, they courteously took a look and confirmed there was a problem with the air conditioning, but unfortunately, so late on a Saturday, they were booked up with appointments and couldn’t assist further. Everyone’s service departments were closed on Sunday, the day we had originally planned our eight-hour drive home. With the warming weather, that drive would have been extremely uncomfortable without air conditioning. Because Sheehy had sold us a faulty vehicle, we had to stay in Richmond until it was repaired. Monday morning we took our brand new Ford back to Sheehy, rising at 5:00 AM because the Sheehy salesman said we’d need to be first in the Service line at 7:30 (despite our early rise, we weren’t first because our Sheehy salesman didn’t know the correct opening time for the Service Department), so we could get the air conditioning repaired and depart for our already-severely-delayed eight-hour drive home. Upon arrival, we sat in a line of empty cars; no one came out to greet us–we finally walked into the service office and asked if someone could help. Once the vehicle intake was completed, the diagnosis (condenser leak) and repair (condenser replacement, recharging refrigerant) took eight-plus hours; having already been badly delayed by Sheehy, we left immediately for home, arriving very late. Delivery of a vehicle with a failed major system is totally the fault of Sheehy: Ford Motor Company notified us, “When the vehicle is delivered to the dealership, they are required to inspect it prior to selling it to the consumer.” With our vehicle, Sheehy clearly failed on their “precise attention to detail” promise as well as Ford requirements. The Sheehy torture became ubiquitous after our return home. Though we had pleaded with Sheehy to allow us to do titling and registration ourselves (having successfully completed such a process for an out-of-state purchase previously) they required us to have the dealer perform these functions (due to “policy”), exacting a $130.00 fee for the privilege. We still had to make a trip to our county offices (in person; it takes us nearly an hour) to pay property tax–having to immediately FedEx Sheehy the receipt, so they could file to title the vehicle; what did we gain for our $130 fee? We could have paid all county/state charges and titled the Explorer ourselves in one trip! We had even explained (to no avail) to Sheehy, in detail, the steps required, including how Sheehy could remain aligned with rebate requirements from Ford. To add further insult to injury, Sheehy’s online sales manager personally committed to provide a behind-third-row all-weather cargo mat as a gesture to recognize our inconvenience. That was many months ago; we never received it. Continuing the list of broken promises, we were told we’d get a survey regarding our new vehicle purchase experience; unsurprisingly, we never got one. When we opted for a brand new Ford vehicle, we expected a product that worked; that is not what we received. Instead, we got one on which the entire front end had to be taken apart to replace a critical component; the service department advised we were lucky a replacement condenser was available or things could have been much worse. Through their unequivocal notification to us, Ford Motor Company clearly places blame for the failure on Sheehy.

Repeat buyer and still happy!

Wife and I worked with Pete Karys for our previous Ford Explorer for my wife and he was great back then and great this time in getting my wife exactly what she needed. The vehicle options was in a vehicle in another location and they brought it without asking and had it ready for us. Total sales process from parking to driving away in her new car was 2.5 hours. Great prices online and no hassles. I hate buying cars but Pete makes it easy. We will always buy our Fords here!

Take your cash and business elsewhere

I purchased a used 2013 Boss 302 from this dealership in early July, 2015, which about 9,200 miles. After agreeing to the purchase, we waited for 90 minutes to two hours for the finance department, even though we were paying for the car with a cashier's check. The salesmen disappeared, and we sat, waiting, and waiting, and waiting ..... Except, of course, for a couple of visits from other employees trying to upsell protectants, etc. Even though the dealership was running a barbeque, no one bothered to offer food or snacks. While we were examining the car, the salesmen assured us the trackey was properly programmed and functioning, in spite of repeated questions and concerns from us. Upon arrival in California, the vehicle was inspected by CHP to verify the VIN, and which time we discovered the car had been in a collision which did not appear on the Carfax report as it was not paid by an insurance claim. This was not disclosed by the dealer. Further investigation into the trackey, requiring several visits to a local Ford dealer, revealed the trackey programming had been corrupted, resulting in a service change to reprogram the key. A report to Sheehy management yielded no response, other than a claim the it was fine when the vehicle left the lot. I also had to have the wheels spin-balanced and an alignment performed, resulting in additional charges. The service enter reported that significant adjustments were required to properly align the vehicle. It will be no surprise that I suggest you take your business and cash elsewhere.

Fantastic Vehicle Buying Experience!

I found the Ford Econoline Van I purchased advertised online. I went to the Sheehy Ford Lincoln Richmond website and clicked on the Internet Chat with one of the sales associates, Rex Dix. I asked him a lot of questions. Rex gave me direct, up front answers to all of my questions (everything he said was spot on and happened exactly like his answers). I had to travel from Maryland to Richmond, VA to test drive the van and he scheduled a convenient appointment for me. When I got there, Rex was busy with another customer and he gave me over to the capable hands of Judd Baker. Judd was very personable, he listened to what I was looking for, was courteous, honest, upfront and direct. I test drove the van and we sat down to make a deal. The entire process was painless, smooth, and honest. I came in ready for tough negotiations with already crunched numbers in hand - and none of it was needed. If you are in the market for a new or used vehicle, You need to go to Sheehy Ford Lincoln of Richmond and ask for Rex Dix or Judd Baker. It was the best car buying experience I have ever had!

Deceptive pricing and poor follow up

This dealership had a low price of $24,579 on a new Ford Explorer this past Saturday. I came in and was quoted one price, and then via phone on Sunday agreed to another price with Stephen. When I asked him to email me the detail so I could provide a deposit, he said he would. This was at 1:30pm on Sunday. When no email came, I called and left a voice mail at 3pm, and then tried again at 5pm, having him paged. No reply. Today I sent an email, and a sales associate called me. The salesperson said that the online price was wrong, and there is nothing he can do. I spoke to the manager (Jordan Fooks), and he relayed the same thing. I find it odd that the price was online and good in an intial writeup on Sat, and now it is not. Especially when their sister site (Sheehy Ashland) has the same car at the price we were discussing. I also find it cowardly that Stephen didn't have the guts to call me back with this news. I had a car on hold at Carmax for 24 hours that I lost as of 4pm Sunday. Thanks to Sheehy Ford of Richmond, I've now lost out on two vehicles. Terrible...........and when they sat down, they told me they are all about "transparency'.............well, talk is cheap people. It takes courage and integrity to back it up.

Great Service and Great Car

In the fall of 2011, I had the good fortune of meeting Aaron and driving a Ford Fusion 2012. After almost 20 years of driving foreign cars (Camry and Accord), I am now driving and Ford Fusion Eco Drive. More than 3 years and 40K miles later, I still LOVE my Ford and the service I get from Sheehy!

I had an amazing experience with Sheehy Ford! I leased my car through them. It was my first time doing all of this on my own, and I really wanted the best SUV for the best price. Aaron P and the rest of Sheehy made it obvious that they wanted this for me too. The entire process was seamless, even though I was 500 miles away in Connecticut! Aaron was always available to me, and I really appreciated that. I chose all of the options and specifics I wanted, got the most amazing price, and they drove my car to my driveway! It was truly the easiest, most exciting event!

We purchased our 2nd mustang convertible from Aaron P. Aaron was a joy to work with! We were not sure if we wanted the car in Richmond or the one in another one of their stores. We decided to get the other car that was out of town and it arrived in Richmond the very next day. He was so easy to talk to and demonstrated everything to us. He even programmed both of our cell phones! We had milk spill in the car and he helped us in getting the car serviced. We highly recommend Aaron and we are also very pleased with the service at Sheehy Ford.
