My best sales experience....twice!!

by lovinmycar2 on 06/06/2016

Bought a used Forester in 2011 from Barry Dean in sales. He listened to my wants and needs and put me in the right vehicle without unwanted sales pitches. Four years later I was ready to trade a Ford truck for a new Subaru Outback. I walked in the showroom door and Barry was there. He said " I know you. You bought a 2010 Forester in Seafoam green. " Now remembering customers is a great gift and it really has an impact on trust. Barry showed me a model that had the features I wanted without pushing me toward higher priced models with features I didn't need or want. In both cases, the process was smooth and relatively stress free.

Dishonest

by outrageous2 on 08/24/2011

This was my first car buying experience. I went into Evergreen Subaru in Auburn, Maine to look at some new cars. I did know what I wanted but my purpose along with my wife was to see what they had available. I walked through the doors and was greeted with smiles. They were more than happy to help us out. They said the car I wanted which was a WRX was available but lucky for me they claimed it was the last remaining WRX limited in the state of Maine. This posed a problem right off. I felt as though they were a little to eager to sell me a car (which I can understand given the economy) but it put me in an awkward position as I did not plan on buying a car at that moment, nor did I necessarily want to buy it from Evergreen. However, I did not have many options since they said it was the very last available in the model that I wanted. The sales Manager, (I won't name this person) basically said it will be on his lot in 3 hours. What? I never said that I wanted the car right now in the first place. My wife said "well maybe this is a good thing, they CAN get you the car you wanted" but this does not explain why he took the liberty of making that decision for me. I complied anyways. I told the manager that I did not have the money up front and that my original plan was to wait until the funds were transferred from an estate. He claimed and I quote " That's not a problem, we'll work with you. We are a no hassle dealership, we make everything as simple as possible" I should have known better than to go along with that but then again I did want that car. I figured If he took the liberty in getting the car I would buy it once my funds were available. The next day he called me and said the car was on his lot and that I should take a look at it. My wife and I went to Evergreen to take a look and then they brought me into the financial office and threw papers on the desk for me to sign. I said what's this? I don't have the money right now, I should probably wait until it does come in. He said non-sense, we know you'll get the money and like I said we'll work with you. I was surprised at this and although a little suspicious he successfully disarmed me. I said so your going to let me drive of the lot with this 32k dollar car with no payment whatsoever? He said yeah, its not big deal. So I thought the paper work he was having me sign was for the new car; As it turns out it was a dmv form that basically signs the title of my current car the saab over to him. This was not known to me. He should have made that clear and the fact that he didn't was deceitful. I figured I would sign the title over to him once I had fully purchased the vehicle so just in case it did not work out as planed I would still have recourse and the use of my vehicle. He said we'll leave your saab here at the dealership and when everything is finalized and we get paid then we will sell your saab. At the time I figured that was reasonable. I look back on it now and it would seem he successfully disarmed the logical center of my brain. I should not have agreed to this. However he seemed so sincere to help us out. I told him that I was told by the executor of my estate that the funds should be available within a week or so, and that I did not have an exact date. Again he said no problem. He sent me the title and bill of sale in the mail. Who does that when the car has not even been paid for yet? I figured he would do that when the purchase was finalized. At least this is what they had me think... Anyway I found out a few (minor) legal problems has delayed my inheritance dispersal. I drove by and told them this. Again they were not concerned and said everything is all set. A week goes by and I get a call from the manager saying " Just wanted to let you know we're all set here to deposit your check by 5pm" I was baffled. I could have sworn we had agreed on 2 weeks. I told him this and he claimed to have (forgotten our original agreement" At this point I could see this was going to be a problem. A big problem. Of course what can I do now? I already have the new car; I have been using it, and they have my old car. Another couple of days goes by and again he called and left a message claiming he was going to cash my check. I guess he doesn't listen very well over the phone so I drive to Evergreen and found him not available, (how convenient for him) So I talked with the financial manager. I brought my paper work from the estate and he took a look. I also told him I could easily offer him the will and the inheritance amount to be received. He said with a disarming impression " That won't be necessary; That you came in today to talk with me tells me that you have every intention of buying the car. Relax nothing to worry about. I will tell the manager this when he gets in ". I told him how I thought the manager was very forceful and rude to me on the phone. He said " Don't worry you won't have to deal with him, you can talk directly with me". So I left feeling better about the whole situation. This was all during our large move from Florida, and the week before my Wife and I's wedding. I couldn't convey they pressure I was feeling. I should not have agreed to any of this until I was absolutely ready to purchase the vehicle but then again everyone at Evergreen was exceedingly forceful to the point of throwing the keys in my lap. The day before my wedding at the rehearsal I receive yet again another message from Evergreen and this time its the financial manager. He wanted to know if everything was "all set" on my end to cash the check. I couldn't believe this. I had just talked with him a few days prior and told him that he would be the very first to know when the money came in. After the wedding we went home to Auburn and had a Mt.Bike competition to attend. After the race I checked my phone and saw that I had a missed call from Evergreen. I listened to the message and it was the F-manager asking me to call him back when I was available. Not ten minutes later I had 2 police cruisers at my door. They told me the manager at Evergreen reported the car stolen! I was besides myself; I just couldn't believe the accusation. Then the F-manager arrived shortly after the officers and said in his goofy expression " Yeah I think the manager wants to keep the car at the lot until the money comes in" He wanted to me sign the car back over to the dealership. I said sure thats no problem, but where is my car? He said they sold it! Again... WOW! They were not suppose to sell my car until the new one was finalized. I just can not believe how they can treat someone like this. I have never once been dishonest, nor misleading. Yet they have been the whole time. They didn't want to wait another week for the money to come in so they call the police and make a false claim. The police even thought it was outrageous. They told me I should not sign it over to them without first getting my car back but at that point I was so very upset and tired that I just wanted the car off my property. The thing is I would have gladly brought it the 2 miles down the street if they had asked. They never did.. they just called the police on me. This is coming from a guy who has never been in trouble with the law. So now I am out my 4k trade in value for my car but also signed back over the new car. They even expect me to re-purchase the car once my money comes in. Please do not trust this dealer, you will find urself in an impossible situation. BestRegards
