Took my vehicle in for service and was told that my warranty had just expired. They said my bumper to bumper was for 36,000mi/3yrs and was valid from 2007-2010. I told them that the car was a 2008, and that I bought it new in 2008, so there is no way my warranty began in 2007. The first service worker said that there wasn't anything he could do about it, the system said my warranty was expired, and I would have to pay for any work, including diagnostics. I asked to speak to someone else, and the woman I spoke to said "yeah, I own a GM vehicle too, and that's the way they do their warranties...the warranty period begins immediately when the vehicle rolls off the line, so even though your vehicle is a 2008, it was manufactured in 2007, so that's when the warranty began. Sorry." She gave me the phone number for GM if I had any additional questions. This obviously made no sense to me, so I called GM and spoke to a very helpful woman who was shocked at what I told her. She looked up my VIN number and discovered that it was simply a typo by the dealership when I bought the car, and that they mistakenly wrote 2007 instead of 2008. After several more phone calls and about an hour of talking to different people, Alaska Sales and Service happily reported that my vehicle would be covered for another year. If I hadn't bothered calling the 1-800 number I would have ended up paying for the work because of some very erroneous info. I don't know if they really don't know how a warranty works (odd, since they sell cars every day for a living) or if they were flat out lying to get me out of the way since it was a busy morning. The original error in the system was not their fault and they eventually resolved the issue, but the fact that they told me that GM sells brand new vehicles with warranties that may already be half over is troublesome. If I didn't know any better, I would have taken their word for it and paid them for the work since it needed to be done.
