Disappointing: Too Many Repairs

I bought my Cirrus new. I changed the oil every 3,000 miles and was religious about routine maintenance. It was a good car for the first 7 years. But then it all went down hill. It has been in the shop so often that I finally had to get rid of it so that I could get something reliable. Now the distributor needs to be replaced at only 86,500 miles! Several other things are also wrong, including a window motor and the A/C condensor. A new car payment will cost less than maintaining this disappointing vehicle.

CAN I TRADE IT IN FOR A PINTO???

I've owned my 95' Cirrus LX for about 6 months and it has been in the shop 13 times - first the waterpump /seals/timing belt went out a week after I bought it ($800 to fix). I had the fuel pump/injector system replaced ($550 to fix). The computer system started failing. At this point I've replaced 3 sensors (crankshaft mechanism sensor, and throttle position sensor twice, all at $200 a piece). I had a new computer put in it at over $700, and 3 days later it started failing again and is now currently in the shop being diagnosed at $70 per hour...my opinion? Chysler has designed a car that makes the Pinto seem like a Mercedes. Don't buy this car! EVER!

Turned me off chrysler forever

AC works when it wants to, no problem can be found; horrible de-fogger; plastic around outside of windows shrunk and split then came off within a year after I bought the car; AC plastic control knobs cracked and came off; for a while when I stepped on the brakes the radio quit; front left sway bar joint needs replacing every couple of years since it can't be lubed; rear right break cyl. has broken twice; silver off of door strips by 1999, very poor acceleration. Overall a lousy car, and a good reason to avoid chrysler in the future. And they wonder why we don't buy American car brands.

I bought a Cirrus when I came back from a year in England and at first was very excited about it. I was stepping up to a V-6 for the first time and the car had decent features. However I soon quickly learned that it was more than I bargained for. Even though it was Motor Trends Car of the Year in 95 (I still have the sticker in my window) it has had repeated problems. Transmission, lower ball joint, poor winter traction (w/new tires), A/C never works ($900 to fix), collant pump problems, dashboard lights burn out, etc. If the car is running properly, it is a great ride and fun to drive w/ the suspension it has but I to have had it behind a tow truck too many times.

HEAD GASKET TROUBLE 3 TIMES

I have just learned that our Cirrus with only 30,000 miles is in need of it's THIRD HEAD GASKET REPLACEMENT . Yes..THIRD! I called Chrysler and all they are going to do is charge us a % to have the head gasket replaced again.. and by the way, there IS NO GAURENTEE that the $$$ we put into it will be the end. After searching the web, I have learned the Chrysler Cirrus has te same engine as the Neon.. yes.. the neon which is known to have head gasket troubles.. and of course Chrysler DOES NOT stand behind their cars..Thank you Chrysler... And I hope this will help a future buyer from being scammed as we were.

I took good care of my car. Oil changes every 3000 miles, etc. Even though I only had 86,500 miles on this 10 year old vehicle, I did its 90,000 maintenance 2 months ago. And it croaked on the side of the road this week. It needs another $1200 to replace the distributor! The back window no longer works and I figure the exhaust system will need to be replaced soon. Forget it. I'm tired of keeping the car repair companies in business.

We bought this car after looking at another chrysler LX. We liked the leather and sound better. since the buy, we have had lots of problems. rear tail light quit working due to a corosive electrical plate($50). then the ABS went out($500plus). and now the brakes wont work half the time. when we press the peddle down every once in a while it just wont move. very dangerous! no one can figure it out without ripping into it deep and charging an arm and a 2 legs. very unsatisfied.

The Cirrus is a fine looking automobile. And that is the last good thing I can say about the car. I have owned this particular car for less than 6 years and it has seen the back of a tow truck about 7 times. A few years ago the starter quit and 2 weeks later the transmission needed replacement. Two weeks after that the front ball joint assembly had to be replaced. Other replacenments were water pump, power steering lines, tie rod ends, exhaust system, electronic spark distribution system, spark plugs, AC components, blower motor control resistor element, timming belt, rear defogger control module, and even the gas tank filler spout. The ABS system packed it in as well.

1995 was the first year and the car got Motor Trend car of the year . It has a great suspension and rides well. The engine is a 165 HP V6 Mitsubishi; the transmission was Chrysler. Except for the radio light which went out on me twice. The car was good for 100,000 miles, with no problems other than normal maintenance, then bad stuff began to happen. Had a rattle in the door as well. At about 140,000 miles the transmission blew, had to replace the catalytic converter, voltage regulator, etc. Glad I did not get the 4 cylinder. The leather was poor quality. Otherwise, I liked the car. Now I have a 2003 Honda Accord Coupe EX with leather. Great car.

Glad We Bought the Extended Warranty!

The poor reliability of my V6 Cirrus LX will prevent me from ever buying Chrysler products again! The styling is great and it was fun to drive but it was often in the shop for MAJOR repairs. The entire air conditioning system was replaced over one extremely hot summer and the entire rack and pinion was also replaced. I'm glad we paid for the extended warranty when we bought the car new! At 70K miles the car began to lurch, accelerate, and die. Neither the dealer nor an independent shop could solve this problem. After $1000 I gave up and traded it in on a VW.

Never buy based upon "Car of The Year". This vehicle has been a huge disappointment, from a bad radiator at 40K (approx); a broken control arm bracket at 30K; leaking freeze plugs at 60K; car dies at idle and trys to at highway speeds (dealer twice has not been able to determine the cause), clunking noises in the front left suspension and in the right rear that no one has been able to fix, radio display that quit when new and now the replacement no longer works; an airconditioner unit that had a kinked metal tube that would not allow it to cool below 80, door panels where the paint scratches off around the hand rest...

Have you ever had paranoia? This car looks good but it is TROUBLE! I have had all four breaks go at one time. I have had to change the fuel filter and the fuel pump! The Odometer light NEVER worked properly. The front end makes alot of noise that no one can find the problem. The keyless entry never worked either! The dealership refused any service on this car and took no responsibility for selling this lemon. SELL IT IF YOU CAN!!

Everyone who gave the Cirrus a bad review has no idea what they're talking about. I got my 95 Cirrus brand new and it has been absolutely flawless. Regular maintenance is all that's necessary. Drives well, build quality is way up there, and I really enjoy driving this car. Incredibly reliable. I live in Minnesota and the car always starts in winter, even after sitting outside all night. I recommend this car highly.

I bought this car used with 50,000 miles, thinking I had found myself a good deal. In the past year and a half, I have already put into the car nearly $3000 for various things from the cylanoid pack, a computer part, front and rear brakes, rotors, etc. Every month this car presents a new problem. I take very good care of my car, keeping all scheduled maintenance, oil changes, etc. I would not wish this money pit on my worst enemy.

I bought this car used, but it only had 20k miles on it. Thankfully, I had the foresight to buy an extended warranty on this car when I bought it, because I got more than my money's worth out of it. In the first 3 years I owned this car, I put as much money (actually, the warranty company did) into repairs as I paid to purchase it. After the warranty ran out, I have averaged $1500 a year in repairs. Note that these are mechanical repairs, not upgrades or cosmetic items. I hate to break it to the folks at Chrysler, but if this is the best they can do, I think I'll spend my money elsewhere.

I bought my Cirrus used at 32K, it now has 175K and is still ticking. Have replaced crank sensor, oxygen sensor, front end stabolizer bars, distributor (big $), rear brake line, and the brakes/rotors mutliple times. It still runs great. Still has original muffler, battery, starter etc. Gas mileage o.k., great pick up with just enough power. Overall, for the amount of miles and daily abuse, it has performed very well. It is paid for, so I plan to keep fixing her till she croaks

This car is fun to drive. It has a lot of get up and go! The car is great when it runs!!!! This car has had a new crank sensor, oil sender unit, solenoid pack, and brakes. It has also (according to dealership)programmed itself to think it has an alarm. It has had over $3500 of work on this car and still has problems. That's a lot of money for a car with 88,000 miles on it. This is the first Chrysler I have ever owned and definitely will be the last!!!!

Before I purchased the vehicle I checked out Edmunds.com review on the Cirrus. They raved about how remarkable it was, "1995 Car of the Year," but what they did not inform me about were the severe defects in the transmissions of the vehicles. Having taken the car in five times in the past five months my patience with the upstart tranny has worn thin. Just remeber to remind your local mechanics its a defect in the transmision module and not the solenoid. Other than that problem the car runs wonderfully and has a fairly good interior.

As was mentioned in several other reviews, this car is very unreliable. I just bought the car six months ago and it has been in the shop four different times. I have had the fuel pump, fuel filter, idle motor, cap and rotor, new ty rods and ball joint replaced so far. Right now its broke down in the garage because it needs a new coil pack/distributor that is over $800. My mechanic has the car more then I do. Stay away.

I bought my cirrus at 32,000 mi. The dealer wouldn't come down on the price, but I loved it (the look of it) so much I didn't care. I've learned a huge lesson!!! The exterior is beautiful, but the mechanics of this car suck!! I had to replace the transmission soon after I bought it! It was in the shop all the time!! The front end was a mess! cv joints always gave me problems. Don't judge a car by its cover!! Now its broke down and I still owe $5000 to my bank!! I'm currently looking for a reliable car!!!

We've it for a couple years. Wife loves it, to me its just OK. We too had a shift problem hung in 2nd. A leaky water pump, dripping on a sensor. Took months to find. PS had a small leak. Some trouble with electrics. Radio sucks. Replaced under a bulletin and new one lasted less than a month. Tach, LR door lock and elec window fail intermittently. The ride is a little harsh for a "luxury" car. But I like that part. It is certainly no lemon, but no better than average. Our experience is better than average on reliability. Big complaint: resale-no one wants it. Over 50% drop in 2 yr.

I bought this car new and beside the usual recalls (on new models), I have not had any major problems. Through the years, it has done great on snow and ice, and wet driving. I think this car is comfortable to drive, but my husband doesn't agree. The car is better suited for an average women or small man. My husband feels crowded in the car and my dad cannot even get in the car. If my car didn't have so many miles on it (I put 40 miles on per day, approx.)I would keep it, but it's getting time to think of replacing. I would recommend this car to anyone, as long as you take care of it.

I bought this vehicle used at 84,000 miles in 2002. Things that went out in less than 2 year time period: power steering pump, alternator, starter (x2), radio stopped working, tape player stopped working, it leaked coolant, (I would have to add it once a month at least. Once at 100,000 miles and again at 120,000 miles, there transmission problems. It barely made it to the dealership to be traded in at 120,000 miles only to find out that it was worth almost nothing because the lit numbers for the odometer reading only lit up 20% of the time. It's a good thing I had tripple a! I used it often!!!!

I bought my Cirrus new in 1995 and have had a great ownership experinece. My car has never been in the shop for unscheduled maintenance. It gets 29-30 MPG highway (with the V6) and 18-20 city. Put a K&N air filter and better rubber on the car, and it'll really get up and go! I've had a totally positive experience with my Cirrus. Very good car for the dollar! I bought it with 54,500 miles in 2000. About 66,000 miles tie rods went out but I was lucky I wasn't going 70 mph. with regular oil changes I believe it to be a great car. Does have a problem with acceleration....takes too long for shifting gears and red lines too long (i.e. going 50 mph to 75 mph)

It feels like the car is out of breath when i passs someone on a 2 lane highway. but the seats are comfortable enough and the backseat is huge! my keyless entry is busted and the door locks suddenly decide on their own to become manual. but its ok for now, even though it sucks up gas by the ton, oh well..

I am the third owner of this vehicle and it has been great from day one. No major problems at all. Great fuel economy, large trunk, and plenty of interior room. A/C still blows ice cold, all power accessories work, and engine/transmission are great. Car has close to 150000 miles on it now and shows no sign of slowing down soon. Loved this car so much I bought an 06 Stratus and have been equally pleased, but still drive the Cirrus for my everyday car and even on long trips.

This is a very nice car -- when it is working. We have had several major repairs over the life of the car (we are second owners, but might as well have been the first, since we got it with 9k miles). The A/C was addressed twice, the 'spark plugs and engine electrical' many times (until out of warranty when a third-party garage actually found the problem and replaced the alternator/coil assembly), and the climate controls had to be replaced once.

I bought my Cirrus used in 1998 with 50K on the odometer and haven't had a problem with her since. I have done all my own maintenance on the vehicle even though I am a layman when it comes to car repair. I have found quite a few aftermarket parts available and I have spent a little time at the track. The ride quality is good and the engine is peppy. A big bonus is the ability to carry 5 full size adults.

After owning a VW Dasher-fun to drive but mechanical disaster; Dodge (Mitsubishi) Colt- reliable, great mileage, but small, poor acceleration, I wanted bigger w/a little style & power. Cirrus served well w/6 cyl providing extra power, comfort, surprisingly roomy interior, + decent mileage (26/30). Few probs but all expensive: computer control module, then A/C compressor, then condensor, major brake job, engine mounts went a early at 90000, but little else for 7 yrs. Extended warranty (both dealer & aftermarket) worthwhile. -Pts for hard to reach battery in driver wheel well; +pts for battery lasting 5 yrs in AZ.

The leather interior feels luxurious as do the comfortable seats. Mine is black ext. tan int. and it looks great! I love how it looks ageless. It's 8 yrs old and still fits in with the new crowd. I enjoy having a V6 and would never consider getting anything but. I've had a good time with the car, except for the AC problems. In '03, I had to replace the whole unit for $1200, and now it's broken again. I have had electrical problems also.

I bought this car on a whim, because I was pregnant, and the car had just gotten a new engine, so I figured it would run great. I was VERY wrong. I've put nothing but money in this car, and it is still very unreliable. It scares me to have my daughter in it, because it does what it wants when it wants, aka it dies all the time. my heater and the odometer do not work, I have to put a tie rod end in it, i've replaced numerous amounts of sensors. The speakers don't work well either. Also the computer is going out. This car has been nothing but a nightmare, and of course no one wants it, so I'm stuck with it. I personally will never own one again.

I have had nothing but good driving from this car. It is zippy and fun, yet roomy enough and with features which allow haulage of larger items. Great!

A Good Car, But Repairs Costly

I use my Cirrus both for traveling the Interstates and getting around New York City. It's very maneuverable and reliable. Fun to drive even, especially since I installed Sirius satellite radio. However costs to maintain the car I find are shockingly high. For example, the OEM muffler or catalytic converter each sell for over $300 retail. To replace transmission seals requires the transmission to be dropped, and that can run over $600 at a discount transmission shop.
