Great Car For The Price!

We own a 2017 Prius plugin hybrid, Tesla Model 3 dual motor Performance Package with Extended Range, and a new 2019 Chevy Volt Premier with all the options for safety. The difference in performance between the Prius and Volt is huge. Volt = 7 sec vs Prius at 11.5 sec. which is very noticeable in real world driving. The Prius feels cheap, with a poor suspension that cannot manage the winding road or a rough surface road. Volt handles much better and in a ride from CA To IN (2000 miles) it managed 3-4 miles better on a gallon of gas than our Prius following me at 65-75 mph. The Prius computer clearly lies about the mileage it was getting where the Volt on board computer was correct in computing mileage. At 70 mph on a tank of gas the Volt achieved 47 where Prius got 43 if you actually checked the real mileage by comparing the gas used and mileage driven. The Volt was MSRP was $41.5k, but the dealer took $6k off the price so it was $35.5 out the door. Already received the $800 PG&E rebate and the $1500 state credit check. After the $7500 dollar Fed tax credit the total cost is $25.7k for twice the car the Prius is. We have the higher voltage 230v charger in the garage so we only pay $1.52 for 60 miles of driving. Most places we go have all free electric charging at work, Cisco, and public parking garages have free charging in Monterey. We average 120 mpg equivalent on battery when we actually pay to charge which is only 50% of the time and 48 mpg on the gas engine which is used less that 20% of the time. The Tesla performance is on another level all together with 0-60 times 50% faster than a Mustang GT HO V8 and faster than a stock 2019 Corvette, and seats four 6’5” people comfortably. While safety features of the Volt are impressive, the Tesla autopilot reduces driver workload significantly as long as you aren’t weaving through heavy traffic like a lunatic. Overall the Chevy Volt is worth $10k-15k more than any Prius, yet costs less because of better tax incentives, and is much more fun to drive. The Tesla has incredible performance for a sedan but costs twice as much as the Volt. My son drives the Prius now and constantly asks to drive the Volt. We don’t let him drive the Tesla because he doesn’t know how to handle a car that is four times faster from 0-60 or 0-100 than a Prius, and can reach speeds of 162 mph. The Volt is the best bargain in the US, and worth much more than any Prius or Honda Insight, yet cost less.

The Chevy Onstar thing is crap. Features that are free with other manufactures, like location, remote start, charge, etc. require a $15 / month payment with Chevy. The car itself is great. Damn shame that Chevy has decided to discontinue this model. It goes over 50 miles on a charge. Consequently I almost never buy gas for it. It has an electric drivers seat to make it easy to adjust your position. Unfortunately it doesn't remember the settings for alternate drivers. The adaptive cruise control is great. For a small car it has a lot of trunk space. The rear seats fold down. It handles well and has a surprising amount of power. It works well with Android Auto. There is really no reason to buy the navigation option. Well it's been a year and a half of hybrid happiness. Locate vehicle now works without a subscription. Likewise with lock / unlock; start / stop; and sound the horn or turn on the lights I get an error with connected services. I'm not sure what the problem is, but it is minor. I took it in recently for a minor recall service. It has over 10,000 miles on it, mostly electric. The recall service was free. No other maintenance was necessary at this time. Why did Chevy discontinue this great car? Update 07/05/23 Still rolling strong. I had to buy tires and wheels for the car. It seems it wasn't really designed for the dirt roads in baja after months of rain. OH well, it's not a truck. I think I also had to replace the 12 volt battery. There was a factory recall that was causing some minor problem. They charged me to fix it. Annoying! I now only get circa 41 miles on a charge. They reconditioned the battery to supposedly fix this, but the fix only lasted a week. I still like the car. Just annoyed with Chevy.

I traded a 13 volt for a 19 volt . The 13 was a great commuter car flashy interior and had respectable acceleration . The gas generator made it a great all around car. Now the first drive in the 19 proved to show me the volt I always wanted ! Great acceleration much longer range (62 mi and its still cold where I live) better fuel mileage and lots of safety equipment and it doesn't scrape the front spoiler as much as my previous car. To bad GM dumped this car its a winner

Bring back the Volt I Won't go Back to my Prius!

Best car I ever owned. Went 3400 miles before refueling with gas! My electric range is 63, well above the stated 53 for this car. Unlike the 2013 Prius I had before, 0-60 in 7 seconds beats 0-60 in 12 every time! We got our Volt our of state and my wife followed me back in our Prius on the 500 mile trip. Driving 65-75mph, the Volt got 47 on gas, while the Prius only got 43. Those of you who drive a Prius, check your mileage with pad and pencil. People who check find that unlike other cars, the Prius computer overstates its mileage by 3-4 mpg (there is a blog for people complaining about this), typically! When I have a bad back, the Volt seats are the most comfortable place to sit. The rear view camera has better definition and (unlike the Prius due to a bad angle on the screen) is easier to view in direct sunlight. I do recommend the blind side detection, as outside visibility is not the best. Also, the rear seat headroom, though more roomy than the previous Volt, is still not adequate for those over 6 ft tall. Can easily accommodate a bicycle, backpack, and other gear for one rider in the back. With rear seat down, rear storage is more than adequate. In Myrtle Beach, we have numerous FREE quick charge stations close by or 30-40 miles from our house. As a result, we are getting over 150 mpgeq! With the optional 7.2 KW quick charge module, we can stop at Tanger outlet and to go Starbucks and do some shopping with a full, FREE charge when we return. Our Volt will charge completely in about two hours for another 63 miles of gas free driving! My son also has a Prius (2014) and he begs us to drive the Volt when he comes home, as the Volt has so much better power and performance. Such a shame that with the demise of the $7500 tax credit this year, Chevrolet has decided to stop making the Volt. Sales have been strong over the years, considered Chevy never advertised for it, and most sales were driven by strong word of mouth recommendations, like mine! Finally, unlike the Nissan Leaf which reported loses 25% of its rated range after 100,000 miles, a Volt blogger who has now reached 400K on this Volt, still has the original batteries, and has lost only 2% of this original range!

This is a really nice car. I transitioned from a Scion xA to this vehicle and love it. The mileage on electric is just perfect for my mostly city driving. I have yet to fill up the gas tank because I have barely used gas. I like the vehicle's interior space and layout. It is very user friendly and easy to use when driving. The vehicle handles well in dry and wet weather. This was one of the best purchases I made.

Not a large interior but very comfortable. One tank of gas lasts all year except when we take long trips. On a recent trip to Arizona, it handled the western desert winds passing trucks at 100 MPH like it was totally calm. Have four Volts on our properties. Three of them for my grown children. Oldest is 2017, bought in 2016. None have ever been in the shop for any repair, of any kind.

I love this car for so many reasons, skipping the gas station is my favorite reason. I must say that after driving a 2013, and a 2014 Volt I was super surprised to see how cheap Chevy went on the interior. There is no longer carpet it is that gross mat pressed fiber stuff that used to be in trunks.. And the Leather I paid for I am not sure is leather. The dash and interior is this new material that you can not keep clean, armor all just spots and jells on it as it does not absorb. if you touch it with even a fingernail it scratches... For people who drive a lot and live in the car, I am so disappointed at the cost cuts and how cheap this car feels it was a 39,000. car. The mats were also the flimsiest I have seen in any car. :(

I have a 2016 Volt and in spite of the anemic climate control and harsh ride I have thoroughly enjoyed driving it. Sitting in the 2016 for prolonged periods of time reveals the deficiency of the support in the driver's seat. Getting in and out necessitates acrobatics, and as I age and get stiffer this has become a real problem. So I was excited to hear that the 2019 version would have a new power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support! If it solved my ergonomic problem I would lease or buy the 2019 when my lease expires (soon). So I tested the new seat in the 2019 and it feels great! It is comfortable and supportive. HOWEVER, the seat is lower than the 2016 seat by a centimeter at best. Getting in and out of the vehicle is as difficult as before, even with the new seat. So I am off looking at a Kia Niro PHEV with comfortable seats and an easy entry and exit via the driver's door. Too bad. I am disappointed.

Halfway to being the Bolt

I had the Volt and it was probably the best PHEV. But since my wife had a gas car, I didn't want a gas-engined car anymore, despite its excellent EV only range. I have moved to "green" and have the Chevy Bolt, which I love. Though its rated 259 mile range by the EPA, I routinely get around 300. Never have to buy gas, wait in line for it, and never run out of power, starting with a full tank each week. I had to turn it in in 2020 as the lease was up; couldn't get good deal on new Bolt which is better than original. Would consider buying as new 2023 models here sell for around $28K. But the Volt was an excellent vehicle. GM decided to axe it to concentrate on EVs but a good used one would be an option for some.

Respect to the makers and manufacturers of this vehicle. You've outdone yourself. When I tell you I "love" this car, I mean it literally. I drove this thing up and down a mountain at 5,000 feet above sea level, obscene inclines and declines, for seven months straight, never had problem. 120,000 miles and it still glides. Masterpiece.

Still getting 100km average on a charge

My Volt 2019 has 105 000km and still getting a average of 100km per charge.... I drive at maximum the limit or under. Every work day I charge twice and sometimes more. It s clearly a money saving strategy for me. In the past 14 years I owned 12 different car including 4 Prius and over a million kilometers. Yearly I drive 50 000+ km and compare to a 2012 Prius I m saving 3000$ + in fuel and maintenance. The ride is way more comfortable and enjoyable. In winter the weight distribution and good snow tires put this car in the upper class for ride control and safety in the bad weather. Nothing compare to a Prius those are really bad in snow. Minus side : rear view...but I own a ford expedition and it's worst. The 7.2kw charging option is a must have to reduce cost and waste of time. The only problem I ve got so far is the Park none recognition issue. The vehicle don t know it s in Park. It's should be a recall but It s not. If you DIY the project it s 2-3 hours and 100$ to swap a new shifter. Garage charge 600-1000$ to do this.

Worst electronics i have ever seen. This car probably has Chinese electronics and low bidder to make them for GM. Have had the car in the shop more than any car i have ever owned. All because of old problems GM hasn't fixed since they built the first Volt. This car is not as described. Car has the 7.2 charger and the Infotainment system that works when it wants to and GM is constantly updating and when they do you loose more of the features the system is suppose to give you. Tire Pressure sensors dont work now and radio is useless as well as the usb play your own music or the sd card slot. And GM will not answer my complaints. Instead they tell me that their is no problem. I could go on for hours on this but choose not to. GM has a problem and they are not facing that problem just sweeping it under the table.

32mpg average on road trip 👎🏽

Paul, 04/23/2019

The car itself was fine and was definitely quicker than I expected. It did feel oddly top heavy and not overly confident in mountain corners. The part that gets my review is the mpg and range.... I rented this car for a 1000 mile road trip expecting mid 40’s mpg like I had gotten with a Prius on the same trip in 2010... when I picked the car up from enterprise they didn’t have the battery charged so I had to drive to Reno with no battery power so it got 32mpg all the way to Reno. So I figured I’d charge it at a Tesla charging station that you see everywhere but when we found one the plug is different... the next day we went to the dealership to use the “quick charger” which was going to take 5 hrs while we were traveling... so I got 32mpg to my destination. That night at 6pm I plugged the car in with the 110 charger provided with the car, and it took till 11:15 the next morning to finish charging.... figuring it was going to finally get the stated 45-50mpg finally it didn’t, it only got 38mpg.. I put the car in hold mode which is supposed to make the car run like a regular hybrid and not run on just ev mode, and it didn’t even last back to Reno (80 miles) then the car went back to 32mpg. These cars were not built for long distance, don’t buy one if you’re not just sticking in your town and driving 20 miles or so a day because the complete charge took almost 18 hrs to charge from empty and didn’t help our mpg for more than 80 miles... may as well have just let the car run ev mode and not bother using the hold mode because it didn’t help
