Great combination of EV and road tripper

Now have over 20,000 miles on my 2017 LT Volt. Trouble free, still looks/run like new, no squeaks or rattles despite nearly 1 mile of gravel road to reach pavement from my house. Does best in town, setting the cruise at 65 will drain the battery quicker. Solid, fun car to drive with great throttle response, quiet, comfortable, a pure EV most days but when I take a long trip I don't give battery range a second thought, I just go. My 5 kWh solar system produces all the power I need to cover the costs for my home and to charge the car. If this car was wrecked or stolen, I would replace it with another Volt without a second thought.

Great Car - Worth Waiting For!

My wife's 2008 Prius was getting rather old, so we went shopping in late 2015 for all kinds of cars. We wanted something that was environmentally friendly, and reasonably priced (for a hybrid or electric). My wife drives about 2 times a week over 100 miles a day, so that ruled out a pure electric vehicle due to the lack of range. I saw the new Prius at the Detroit auto show, and was put off by the weird spacey design. From expert reviews, it seemed that Toyota was aiming more for high MPG numbers than striking a balance between performance, handling and comfort. I was intrigued by the upcoming Chevy Malibu Hybrid. The non-hybrid version that came out recently got very good reviews in the automotive press. After seeing them at the Chevy dealer, my wife thought it was a little too big for her. The kids are grown and out of the house, and the back seat would be empty 95% of the time, so the Volt is fine for us. I read many of the glowing technical editor reviews of the 2016 Chevrolet Volt. Even magazines like Car and Driver who seem to only lust after exotic performance cars seemed to really like the new Volt. The more I read, the more we wanted to test drive one. Then we realized that only certain states were going to get the limited 2016 Volt deliveries. Living in Delaware, our state was not on the list, so we waited some more for the 2017's which were going to be produced starting in Feb 2016 for all 50 states. While waiting, I also did a little more research on the $7500 Federal Credit, but I also found that there was a (very) limited $2200 rebate offered from Delaware for certain qualified electric vehicles (it's almost gone, so hurry!). Delaware also offers up to a $500 rebate for the car "charger" or EVSE in the electric lingo. So the almost $10K in help from Federal and state made the final cost to us VERY reasonable. (Price shown below is full cost without help) So when the first batch of Volts hit Delaware, we test drove one. We were hooked. We've had it for about 3 weeks, and we are extremely happy and delighted with the car. For most trips around town, we use 100% electric. There is very good power at city speeds due to the torque of the 2 electric motors. We live in a college town with hundreds of zombie kids staring at cell phones while crossing the street. I was concerned that one would blindly walk into us while we were in silent electric mode, but GM installed a "white noise" speaker that makes some fake mechanical robot noise below 25mph, that hopefully lets pedestrians (and my cats) know we are in gear. We did take a long trip to DC, with about 3 hours of driving on the engine. The engine starts unobtrusively, and is not very loud. I can feel slight vibration that lets me know it's on, but I was looking for it. Most people probably wouldn't know when it switches over to the engine. We now have 1100 miles on the car, with some long trips (engine on), and we are averaging overall now about 90 mpg combined. Of course, running with the engine on all the time (you can force it on to hold battery charge or to get quick cabin heat), it's not as efficient as a Prius, as we've seen about 43 mpg from the engine only. But the combined of about 90 mpg without worrying about range is awesome. Driving dynamics are much better than our old Prius. The car feels and sounds very solid. It handles rough pavement without much noise, and with good control. With all the battery and engine weight, it's not a light car, but it never feels heavy. The electric steering is very good with nice feel. When braking slightly, the motors act as generators feeding juice back to the battery, and if you press harder, the friction brakes come on. It feels a little non-linear, but it’s fine. The 110V charger (EVSE) that the car comes with is very slow to charge as it defaults to a safer 8 amp charge so as to not cause electric problems in your house that may have poor wiring. This takes forever to charge (~19 hours for full charge?) You can set the 110V EVSE to supply 12 amps but you have to keep re-setting it in the car's dash screen which is very annoying, and it's still very slow to charge. (~13 hours for full charge?). So with the $500 credit Delaware offers, I bought a Clipper Creek 24 Amp "Level 2" or 240V EVSE, with a dryer plug on the end. I had a 240V line run to the garage with the added benefit of being able to run my 240V welder from the dryer plug when not charging the car by simply unplugging the EVSE. Anyway, all that was definitely worth it. The Volt now charges within 4.5 hours max from empty. Buy it. The car is highly recommended. UPDATE SEPT 2016. We've had the car for 8 months now. We love it even more than before. No mechanical issues with the car, and it still drives great and quiet. Our combined MPG is over 105 mpg now as most of our trips are pure electric. We noticed that when it's warm outside, the range is more like 55 miles before the engine starts.

Pro's Value is outstanding so far. It drives and feels like a luxury sedan. It is more fun to drive than my Audi. Electric torque is exhilarating... It's not a Tesla but one third the price. I personally like the new body styling. Cons: Visability is not great making the driver packages I and II both a must. Also, most dealerships don't seem to know much about the car. Mine was left in "transport mode" WHICH SHUTS OFF HALF OF ALL THE ELECTRONICS. The internet helped to rectify this Update: November 17, 2016 I have now had the car for five months and love it more every day. I'm getting between 55 and 58 miles on electric charge and unlike pure electric vehicles, this car travels easily long distances when the gasoline engine starts. I'm really at a loss to explain why they're not more of them on the road

2017 Volt LT The ultimate commuter car

Alex from California, 09/15/2016
2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 4dr Hatchback (gas/electric hybrid DD)

I did a lot of research and test driving before I picked the Volt. I wanted to spend the least amount of money I could on commuting everyday but do not want to sacrifice the refinement, comfort, utility and fun of a new sporty sedan. This car fit the bill almost perfectly for me. First the money: The price of the car comes out to about the same as a Prius when you factor in all the incentives (dealer and government). In my opinion after driving them both I would pay $5000 more than for a Prius still feel I got a good value. If you usually would go under 100 miles or so between charges your energy costs are going to be lower than any other hybrid currently in the market with the Volt. Since my total commute between charges is about 50 miles I only use electricity, the cheapest energy available to me. In my area the power company also gave me a check for $300 (free commuting for a year!) and a lower power rate overnight when charging my Volt. Refinement and Comfort: The Volt does better in this area than the compact/sub compact hybrids like the Prius and C-Max Hybrids (that to me are just a chore to drive), but not quite as good as the larger Fusion and Sonata Hybrids. Ultimately this will depend on taste and what you expect from your car but for me I have been use to bigger luxury type cars for a while so this was important to me. The smooth quiet commute, technology and integration with my Android Phone (it has it for Apple as well) sold me. Utility: Paying only for cheaper electricity for my commute is great, knowing I could still go unlimited miles or over big hills with no hassle when needed is even better. This is what turned me off to a electricity only (EV) car. Also being big enough to fit all of my family (4) easily was also important to me, even though I would use this car almost exclusively for daily commutes and short trips around town. Finally the Fun: I think this is what put me over the edge with this car, it is actually fun to drive. Quick, smooth acceleration and reasonable grip (probably due to batteries creating a low center of gravity). All in all, it is my ultimate commuter car.

Generation 2 is Better than Generation 1

I leased a 2013 Volt for 3 years, being unsure of the new technology. I purchased my 2017 Volt 5 weeks ago and I can truly say that the Gen 2 model is better in every way over the Gen 1. The silky smooth acceleration of the electric drive is intoxicating. The 53 miles of EV range meets my driving needs perfectly. I expect to buy gas only once a year.

Still luv this car. Since the AC hose needed replacement. Have EGR high pressure code Dreded 401. Looked at ALL owner posts. Found a good local mechanic. Identifed dirty temperature sensore and dirty cooler. Cleaned both. No issues. before changing ANY thing on the EGR system, have mechanic test and possibly clean. Also, STOP using gas without detergents. Like non-name brand stations. Finally had enough. The car 'Bricked' had to get towed 90 miles. My Mechanic identified a bad HV battery cell. So needs to be replaced. Absolutely no support from ANY Chevy dealer of GMC HQ. Found a company that would swap with reconditioned one for 14k$. Really, decision time. NO MORE EV for me. Back to reliable and part supported ICE. Great choice. It's actually greener than the Fraud EV. Based on MPG vs miles per KW. even at almost 4$ per gal. I support EV by choice. Not the soon to be mandate. So much for the average working man affording an EV. Too bad. I thought GM had a winner. OOPS. not so much.

One Saturday morning, I visited a Cadillac dealer, 2017 ATS. Left to ponder what options I wanted. Before returning, I stopped by a Chevy dealer. Test drove a 2017 Volt, got hooked, then purchased. WOW. I'm now an EV devotee. My wife now drives a Cadillac and I drive the Volt. I can't understanding why GM (Chev) has not promoted or improved the Volt. Great car, great concept. So much so that Honda, for 2018, has a plug-in hybrid call Clarity. The Honda Clarity looks just like the Volt! Hummmm.

Better than the 2012 in every way

This is my second Volt. I owned 4 Prius vehicles prior to my first volt. I traded my prius for the premiere 2012 Gen1 and loved the car, but having owned the 2017 premier Volt for 2 months, I'm blown away with the greatly improved Gen2. I just fill my gas tank after driving 2027 miles. The electric range is greatly improved and routinely get far better than the rated 53 mpg by GM. Since its only my wife and I, the back seat is never used, so the 5th seat doesn't matter to us. The 2 rear bucket seats are great for the grandkids with the center 5th seat excellent for a child seat. The Gen2 premier is packed full of electronics and safety features. I have the comfort package 1 and 2, ambient lighting that my wife just loves and the radio/nav package. The apple carplay is also a very nice feature if you own a IPhone 5 or newer. If you don't have or want the GM nav feature, CarPlay maps works really well for navigation. I am extremely pleased with the Gen2 and have no complaints.

My third Volt . . . and still my favorites

The 2017 Volt is truly a second generation car. Whereas the first generation was unique, the second generation is more in line with the latest generation Chevrolet vehicle/setup. The improvements are obvious . . . longer range, quicker, brake paddle, regular fuel, and technology. Unfortunately, they took out a couple of nice things like the HomeLink, side mirror signals, and rear door pockets. BUT I'm still very pleased with the 2017 especially the range and BRAKE PADDLE. These cars are fun to drive and they are reliable. Other than the cord recall back in 14 and the software update in 15, I have not had one issue . . . plus much less gas and much less maintenance. My wife has the 2014 and loves it. Keep up the good work on the Volt. I will add/update to the review after a year but if this model performs in line with my 2012 and my wife's 2014, it will continue to receive high marks. After a year . . . still a big Volt fan. I found a used 2014 ELR (based on first generation Volt) and am enjoying it. Not as utilitarian as the Volt but fun to drive.

Fun to Drive and Great Milage

I owned a 2011 Prius 4 for about five years before purchasing a 2017 Volt. I loved the Prius for its fuel economy, its practicality, and its spaciousness, (felt like it had more room than the gas guzzling BMW X-3 I drove and never fell in love with years ago). Having said this, Chevy Volt is in a different class than Prius. The Volt drives like a luxury sports sedan, I get about 65 miles per charge (I've stopped at a gas station once after driving the car about 1100 miles and still have half a tank left). The controls are very intuitive, the seats are comfortable, integration of iPhone and center display is user friend, it runs very quietly with minimal cabin noise, it drives very tight, and Driver Confidence packages are great additions that are reasonably priced. The minor improvements that could make this car even better would be the addition of a Homelink device and a spare tire (many EVs don't come with spare tires anyway). The visibility is a bit limited but the Driver Confidence packages more than compensates for this. We got a screaming deal with $1000 instant rebate, $1500 California rebate, $7500 federal income tax rebate, and 0% financing. My wife has a plug in Prius 2014 and she loves driving my car now. On a global scale, it is reassuring to know that GMC has invested more than $450 million dollars on its Battery research/development/production in its Detroit plant involved in making EVs. Not only it is a reason to be proud of cars made in America, but this investment also makes me feel reassured that GMC is committed to development of EVs and will stand behind the Volt. "The Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant is the world’s only automotive plant that mass-produces extended-range electric vehicles – including the Volt, Cadillac ELR and Opel Ampera – for markets in 33 countries." http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2014/Apr/0408-investment.html

My second Volt. 2013 was very good and I averaged 94 mpg but the 2017 is superior in every way. Drives like a bmw 5 series. Styling exterior and interior is greatly improved. After 1 week on electric I'm showing 61 miles w charge. Drove 600 miles first day and averaged 46 mpg driving on reg gas. Dash and controls are intuitive and easy to use. Interior fit and finish is very good. Leather seats excellent. Could not find one in stock in Dallas.

Fully Loaded Gen 2 Volt

Metro Chicago Art, 09/14/2018
2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier 4dr Hatchback (gas/electric hybrid DD)
10 of 10 people found this review helpful

I have owned two 2017 Chevy Volt Premiers each with the same four option packages: Confidence (that is, safety) Packages I and II, Adaptive Cruise Control and Premium Sound with Navigation. The car should truly bear a Buick or Cadillac nameplate. It is one of a handful of 2017 cars assembled in America to earn the highest safety rating of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: "TOP SAFETY PICK+". It is actually two different vehicles (that is, powertrains) in one: (i) a pure plug-in electric-only vehicle ("EV") with a 50+ electric mile range (except in winter) and (ii) a Prius-like hybrid when the electric range is exhausted or sooner if you choose to be operating in hybrid mode while saving the battery-only miles. In hybrid mode, the vehicle gets 40+ mpg despite hauling the heavy batteries. In EV mode, it is virtually as fast off the line as a Tesla. But, unlike Teslas and most other EVs, it is not "range limited" and there is no "range anxiety" especially during cold weather. The two front seats are comfortable and spacious, easily accommodating football linemen. The back seats are not uncomfortable but are not designed for larger/taller adults. A young child can sit in the center rear (with legs spread where the pronounced "hump" of much older cars is replaced by a part of the high voltage battery pack). It has a fine sound system, Bluetooth, USB ports and auxiliary port. It will play videos off of a USB flash drive on the large center display if the car's transmission is in "P"; if not, it plays the audio only. Honda's plug-in Clarity is the first real competition with better rear seating but lacks the technical prowess of the Volt. With the 60/40 rear seats down, the Volt can carry a surprising large payload. Why have I owned two 2017 Volts? Answer: a 16 year old driver (who "didn't see me coming") decided to start up from the stop sign controlling his side street to cross an arterial street on which I was traveling in the 40 mph range perpendicular to each other just as I entered the intersection. I had about one second to mash the brake pedal (and did) before impact (right 1/3 of the vehicle's front) with full front airbag deployment. That first 2017 Volt of mine was totaled by his insurance carrier and I replaced it using the insurance recovery with an identical used Volt except for the exterior color. My wife and I were kept safe by the Volt's outstanding safety features and suffered apparently only minor bruises and minor pain from the rapid deceleration and airbag deployment. The Adaptive Cruise Control ("ACC") and lane-keeping systems make driving, especially long distance highway driving, so much easier. It is far too easy to go too fast in this car unless you have the ACC engaged or pay close attention to the speedometer. Its low center of gravity--due to the low placement of the batteries--makes cornering a breeze with little, if any, body lean. My now-destroyed Volt had lifetime mpg of around 73 in a roughly 50/50 mix of long distance (325 to 600 mile one-way trips) road trips and EV-only local commuter driving. My replacement Volt's lifetime mpg is currently in excess of 100 mpg. Under Commonwealth Edison's wholesale electric plan ("RRTP"), my driving in EV mode costs about 2.5 cents per mile. Regenerative braking means brake jobs are basically unheard of. Oil changes are no longer based on miles because the engine is, of course, completely turned off in EV mode and are likewise far and few between. Purchased new, the Volt still qualifies for the $7,500 federal income tax credit. GM outdid itself with this outstanding vehicle.

Read the manual if you want the most out of Volt

(EDIT: Update at the end)I've had my '17 Premier with all the toys for just less than 2 months and just over 2000 miles. The car easily covers my 30 mile commute in 45mph speed limits with only plugging in every other day. I have taken one 700 mile trip and that is almost the only time the engine has been on. Car is wonderful in all respects except for limited headroom on entering (I'm tall) and short headroom in back. I'm a geek and love all the tech toys but was happy when wife drove and announced it was "just a car," not intimidated like she was by the sci-fy looks found on other EVs. Was going to wait to write a review but reading the problems others report I have to say RTFM. There are display readouts and controls you will not know about unless you read the manual. the car is designed to be not intimidating at first glance to the EV novice. This is the kind of vehicle we need for mass adoption of EVs in the US. Many dealers don't know or care about EVs. Find one that does. It will change your experience of the car. There is a wide range of options. Park assist is useless to me but some love it. I love adaptive cruise control that will bring you to a full stop in traffic. Navigation is an option since you get it for free on your phone but you can order it if you want. I did my homework and shopped carefully. This is the most advanced powertrain available anywhere, and I can take the back roads, not having to route myself towards the next Supercharger. UPDATE: I've had the car for almost 2 years and have put 22,000 miles on it. I just got back from a 2,000 mile trip where I only charged once (for free at a hotel) and averaged 39.3 MPG with combined high speed highway and mountain driving. Lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control make long distance travel far less stressful and tiring. The car is very comfortable for me long distance. Both interior and exterior have held up very well. I charge at home most days and get up to 70 miles city range out of a charge in mild weather. My record is 75 miles. I really only ever buy gas when going out of town. As I have heard many others say, this is the best car I have ever owned. It is tragic that GM chose to discontinue it. Honestly I don't think I ever saw an advertisement or promotion for the Volt. Most people don't know what it is or why it is special. Because of this they are a very good deal on the used market. Be willing to pay a bit extra if you can find one with the adaptive cruise control (ACC). It is an amazing feature seldom if ever seen on cars in this price range.

dealer problems and lemon

I would love the car with the exception of three problems that I have had since day three, and one the engine light came on about every two weeks, the dealer versus fixing the problem told me there was no fix so once a week I went to the dealer and they would bypass the engine light sensor, when I told them the mode buttons did not work, they told me that the mode buttons were not supposed to work but were computer controlled. Out of the five months I have had the car, it has spent two months in the shop. The dealer only 4 occasions did not write a ticket when carried in and only pulled into shop and reset the sensor. I have an email that the dealership manager sent to GM after market regional manager telling him that he had never seen a car with so many problems. I have emails from the service director which have been proven false. Had I had a different dealer things might have been different. With all the verified problems I have ask GM to repurchase the car so I could purchase one without the problems this one has, they denied twice and I had to hire a lemon law attorney to file a lawsuit which is in process now. If not for the dealer and verified problems, I would love the car and plan to buy another once lawsuit is settled. Even today the info center and blue tooth do not work and when on phone through the info center people I am on phone with can only understand one or two words out of 7 words spoken. The car would be wonderful but I am very disappointed with the dealer, and even more with General Motors for not stepping up to the plate and repurchasing the car with all the known problems. I have friends that have the Volt that have never had a problem while mine has been a constant problem. I have a photo where the car went in for engine light with the service ticket written and when the car was returned, the engine light was still lit, nothing was done to the car although a ticket was written

I purchased the 2017 Volt Premier with safety packages 1 and 2 after owning a 2013 Volt for 3 years. The first Volt i owned was fabulous, no breakdowns and superb mpg, and I couldn't wait for the new model. As other professional and consumer reviews have reported, the new model is an upgrade in almost every way, which says a lot since the first generation model was so good. I drive mostly in the city and can go almost all electric with 50+ miles per charge. The charge seems to last longer in hot weather than my previous Volt. It has been 100 degrees the last few days and the AC has been strong and not using high amounts of the charge. The car rides quietly, smoothly, and corners nicely.Even the gas engine is more quiet than the earlier model. The Sport mode is fun to drive (and provides excellent acceleration when needed.) Overall, the car is much quicker on acceleration. The technology is superb, whether entertainment or safety. The technology interface has been cleaned up and is more intuitive, with the plethora of buttons reduced. I would recommend getting both safety packages; they were $500 each and well worth the additional money. The Volt does have blind spots in the rear because of the small deck window and the side because of the headrests, so the safety packages seem almost necessary. This is a great car and I am so pleased with it.. Here are a few small items, good and bad, you might want to be aware of: 1. The garage door opener was eliminated on the 2017. Really? What were they thinking? Garages aren't used anymore? For a car that is technologically sophisticated this is the most backward change. 2. My previous interior was pebble beige and it held up well and did not show dirt or marks. The 2017 I own has a black interior and the plastic shows marks and smudges much more. Any touch of the hand or scuffing the door kick panel leaves a mark. Be prepared to detail the inside of your car more. 3. The regeneration lever is awesome and makes driving more fun. 4. Putting the steering wheel volume buttons for the stereo on the back side of the wheel was brilliant. Your fingers can naturally rest there and it is easier to manipulate the buttons. 5. On the 2013 if you needed to put the back seats down to haul something, you could not have the front seats back fully because the back headrests would strike the front seat in the down position. There is more space now and the front seats do not interfere when the back seats are down. On top of that, the front seats now feel like they have more leg room. Chevy has taken care of all the big items and dramatically improved an already good car. I love my Volt!

Failed steering at 8,000 miles

Just about to enter highway when steering completely failed without any prior warning. Car had just been serviced. Took 6 days to fix. Chevrolet found steering replacement but "couldn't get bolts" to install. Call to original salesman, De Nooyer in Albany, NY very unhelpful. We could have been killed when steering went. No follow up from Chevrolet. After buying Japanese cars for 40 years this was our first American car. Very disappointing and we will get rid of it as we are terrified of it happening again.

Best car I ever owned

I waited until I had this car for 6 months before I wrote a review. I previously owned a Prius which I thought was great. My husband didn't like it very much but he is tall. The Volt took a bit of getting accustomed to, but I love this car more and my husband even loves this car. I purchased this car because I felt the 50+ mile range of the electric energy would provide me with 90% of my driving needs. I was right about that. Beyond that, there is no range anxiety due to the gas backup. As far as electric bill impact, I can't comment. We have solar panels and so far the impact on our electric bill has been zero-free transportation. The dealer did tell me to be sure to rotate the tires because I really don't use the engine so I have been keeping up with that. I love the way the back seats fold down easily for when i really have to pack the car. For me, this is the best car ever. This is my first Chevy car, and my first American car. My only complaint is the mpg estimator stops at 250 mpg. I have had this car 6 months and put gas in for the first time 2 weeks ago. The price of gas is irrelevant to me. As an update, I have now had this car over 2 years and with about 20,000 miles on it, I have started my fifth tank of gas. The car works great, reliable, electronics work great. I've had no problems. Why did they ever stop making these cars. Dumb move Chevrolet. Over 2 years later and I still love it.

Souped-Up 2017 Volt Premier is Super

Two cars-in-one: (i) Pure EV for around 50 miles; (ii) Upscale Prius-like hybrid (extended range) after the EV miles are used up. No range anxiety. No 30 minute or long charging stop on long distance road trips. Excellent cold-weather performance. Very comfortable and spacious front seats. With 60/40 rear seats folded down, the storage capacity is more than ample. Fantastic acceleration. Powerful regenerative braking means brake jobs are unheard of. Never use gasoline for about-town driving and daily commutes. Top Insurance Institute safety pick. The safety features includes Automatic Braking, Lane Keeping (in addition to lane departure warning) and Adaptive Cruise Control and powerful headlights including automatic hi/lo beam.

This is my second Volt . My first was a 2013 and I loved that car so much. That was great until I test drove a 2017 at the dealer in SPORT MODE !!! WOW is all I could say as I literally burned rubber out of the dealership driveway. It is so much quicker than my older Volt it was amazing and I had to have one. Me being the frugal individual that I am I waited for just the right Color RED and interior option dark ash cloth to show up on Carguru. com for less than 20,000 and I had to have it. The 2017 is better in almost every aspect. The 5 things they should have left alone are the rear lower window we liked it, the Garage opening control button should of stayed the original charge door function was better for me on the 2013 the door panels in the generation 1 are much more attractive , blinkers on side mirrors also should of stayed. Aside from those five things the 2017 steering is way better more like any other GM car is excepted to steer. Ride seems a little better. Looks in my opinion the front end changes are way better and rear taillights are superior. We have had the 2017 for 2 moths we had our 2013 for 11 months before we upgraded. Love driving my Volt it makes me smile. I'm not the typical GREEN Persons my other vehicle is a GMC Dura-Max Diesiel truck. I love power and the second generation Volt delivers. Car And Driver rated it as one of the fastest 1/8 mile track cars being built less the muscle cars so I had to drive it and prove it to myself. They were right. My 2017 will outrun almost anything out there off the line you can get out in traffic with ease. This is no GOLF CART as I was asked by the guy that bought my 2013. The comfortable ride is more like a big sedan , ' Buick -ish ' and mix that with the power and 99% of the time no gas and it's improved drive abilty and Chevy has a winner. It blows me away at just how nice the 2017 Volt is. So fun to drive is my final summation !!!! One year latter I still say this technology is amazing and oh so fun to drive !!!!!!!! Nearly two years latter I still love my Volt . I just wish Mary Barra GM CEO had the brains to have made Gen 3 Voltech was rumored to be a Equinox which as my wife and I get older would have been easier to get in and out of. Still love the Technology and telling OPEC to buzz off most all the time !!!!

Given my lifestyle, having now about 1600 miles on my 2017 volt, my cumulative MPG is at 197. Try getting that with any Prius-like parallel hybrid (the Volt is a sophisticated Series-Hyrbid; oly design that makes sense, similar to a desil-electric railroad locomotive). And, i do not even hve a 240 volt charging station installed yet; I'm doing 8 or 12 AMP (easily selectable) 120 volt charging. Once you deal with a moderate learning curve, the 2017 Volt is very well set up in every way. I love mine. -- Paul J. Watson, ABQ, NM, USA.

I just purchased a 2017 Volt and its so superior to my old Honda, its far and away a better vehicle. The car is so nice to drive and I have owned it for 4 weeks and still have half the original tank of gas the dealer gave me with the purchase. I have a 240 volt charger and it takes 3.5 hours to go from depleted to charged. I am a new owner to a plug-in but so pleased with the car, the looks have people impressed and asking questions. So far with mostly electric miles I am getting a 90+ mpg, I make lots of shorter trips. I also like the re-gen brakes, I travel down a longer grade and gain about 5 to 8 miles of electric power.

Picked up our 2017 Volt at the end of the month. This is replacing our 2013. Like the way it handles and the power seems pretty good for this size vehicle. Had the car for a couple of weeks. Michigan has been gloomy and not to sunny. Finally had a sunny day and had car washed. While wiping down the door jambs and other areas with some detailing solution noticed something peculiar. This car is Black Metallic with black interior. What I noticed was that the yellow primer was showing thru the paint ! Upon further inspection found the following items. Primer was visible along drivers rocker panel. Driver rear door; all around body to door seal, primer was visible. All the hinge areas were not painted. Pretty much every where you looked there was the primer showing. All areas where body panels joined, no paint. Now, one would expect a $40,000 car to have somewhat of a decent paint finish. Not this one ! Immeadiately took it to dealer. After some discussion got the following input. Paint department ," Well if it was my car, I wouldn't do anything, can't see it too much." Reminded him it wasn't his car nor money ! Then someone called GM, I think, not sure but got this remark. " If you can't see it in natural light then it's OK." If this is the quality GM and the dealer would like to pursue, well they better drop the price about $10,000 - $15,000. When I buy a new car my expectation is I get a new car. Not one that needs repair as soon as you take it ! In all fairness GM Assistance is looking into this problem. Should I hold my breath ?

My Second Volt

Patrick, 10/25/2017
2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 4dr Hatchback (gas/electric hybrid DD)
5 of 5 people found this review helpful

The second-generation Volt takes what was great about the first Volt (it's drivetrain technology) and adds better interior functionality and a sharper look to make what I think is the best EV on the market. The first Volt tried a little too hard to be weird, particularly on the inside, where buttons were hard to use, oddly placed, and the whole thing just had the stink of overdoing it. The new generation goes back to a more conventional set of controls for the climate control system, and adds a very large touch-screen system (with redundant buttons and steering wheel controls) that has been engineered to work just right, and to be intuitive and clean. The main instrument cluster - which was a screen on the old car - is still a screen, but they have improved the interface remarkably, while adding some new features that are handy and look really good. Apple CarPlay is still in its early days and has its bumps, but that isn't the fault of GM - and in fact, it works better on this entertainment center than in any other car I have tried. I do get the impression that GM spent some of its engineering time trying to figure out how to make the car cheaper to manufacture - something that got the company in big trouble a decade ago. I don't think it is as quiet as the first generation, and some of the materials are clearly cheaper. But the pay-off is that range is better (on warm days, I can get an all-electric range of just over 60 miles) and gas mileage is better when running the internal combustion engine (around 40 mpg). The drive continues to be smooth, acceleration is surprisingly potent, and the whole experience is positive. The new "regeneration on command" button on the back of the steering wheel is a good idea, but they programmed it to be too aggressive - it feels like you are standing on the brake pedal. About 30% less bite and it would be perfect for me. That error is particularly surprising to me since I feel like they really did a great job in making the first Volt so easy to drive by careful and thoughtful programming of all the complicated systems. The new Volt is just as great, easily the most technologically impressive car you can buy at this price point. It is likely to be just a bridge to a more robust EV future, but if you don't want to wait for the year 2025, jump in now.

Outstanding car so far. I've been getting 60 miles electric so far but great to have the gas back-up when needed (which so far is very rare but appreciated). I was somewhat hesitant at first to buy a Chevy, as I've owned Toyotas, Hondas, and VWs, but given the tax credits and incentives, and especially when combined with home solar, it's a no brainer. Fun to drive too, and I was able to gear it up with Yakima racks, a hitch (for a bike rack), without affecting my MPGe (aside from at fast speeds on the freeway).

I've owned the 2017 Volt for over a year and am very satisfied with the vehicle. In the last year I have filled the gas tank twice, and that was only because of extended road trips. For daily driving I use the 110v portable charger that came with the vehicle and I've always had a full charge pulling out of the garage. I routinely charge at 110v/12 amps, and have no need for a high voltage installation. One quirk is that the car defaults to 8 amp charging (to avoid overloading low amp circuits). However, if you have a 110v/14 Amp outlet, you can program your “home” GPS location into the car and then set the home default charging to draw 12 Amps. This way an overnight charge is enough to fully charge an empty battery. My 20 mile daily commute uses about 30% of the battery capacity. There's really no reason to worry about remote charging stations with this vehicle because you've always got the gasoline backup. (I've never even bothered to look for a charge station away from home). The volt has two electric motors and one gasoline motor. The latter only kicks in when the battery charge is below a preset value. In this situation the car stops behaving like a pure electric vehicle, and instead acts like any other hybrid. The driver can force the car into hybrid mode (to “hold” battery charge). This makes sense for long freeway commutes, where it is better to preserve battery power for stop & go city traffic. The electric motors have great acceleration from a stand still. The car looks nice and has an elegant interior. The sound system is very good, and I make regular use of Apple Car-Play for maps, directions, music, and hands free messaging. The hatch is big enough to get my 58 cm road bike inside, (with the front wheel off) since the back seats lay down flat.

I purchased this fully loaded 2017 Volt Premier in May 2016. The first 30 days the car was in service 3 times for electrical problems the dealer thought were repaired. GM dispatched specialist who upgraded software and it worked. 2 years no issues and 14500 miles. Now another intermittent issue. Car does not recognize in park and no shutoff. Brought to dealer and problem occured while checking car in but technician could not replicate. Upon return home same it showed problem again. Now calling GM.

. Gonna start off by saying I don’t hate everything in the car. The drivetrain is excellent, plenty of power and fun to drive. However, I’ve had it a year and a half and 11,000 miles and I can’t keep it out of the dealership. Tire problems since new, sidewalk bubbles since the week I picked it up. Check engine light all the time. 6 trips to the dealer with evap problems. “Aerodynamic” louvres behind the front grille freeze up all the time in the winter causing a check engine light, which in turn, prevents remote start from working. Infotainment would be great if it worked, but it only does about 50% of the time. Bluetooth doesn’t always connect, neither does apple CarPlay and when it does it doesn’t always work properly. Replaced phone and cable, dealer updated system, no improvement. Was told “that’s how they all work.” Finally purchased satellite radio because the CarPlay sucks and now I get terrible reception. Can’t win with this car, never again.

1200 miles and 3 gallons of gas! I have a 220aV charger in my garage from my Leaf which I sold so we drive on electric charge almost always. The android auto app is awesome for directions. Just say where your going and it comes up on the screen. Same for music, phone calls. Text messages pop up on screen and push text to voice and you hear them read. Great sound system. Not impressed with Ontario so I will cancel after free trial. Love all the safety features like blind spot warning, Lane departure, parking assist. Highly recommend this car. First American car in over 10 years. Dr. S

Perfect electric car for present. With 60+ miles of electric you can do most everyday driving in electric, but you have the peace of mind of having a gas generator that will kick in after that so you have 400 miles of range for long trips. Besides the electric technology, it has optional safety features like adaptive cruise control (car will slow or speed up based on traffic), automatic high beams (senses other cars and dims automatically), drift adjust (if you start drifting in your lane car will bring you back towards center), and sensors all over that keep you aware of cars around you. And supposedly low speed braking but I am not planning to test that feature! This is my second Volt and they really did a nice job updating the styling and range.

Very Unreliable Transition from Battery to Gas.

I recently experienced a very dangerous and unsafe situation while driving a recently leased new 2017 Volt PHEV on the freeway. I was driving on HWY 280 in California form San Jose to San Francisco after fully charging my car on 12/01/17. After travelling about 52 miles the battery charge depleted and I expected the car to transition from electric to gas smoothly without any problems. This time it did not transition, in fact the battery died and the car came to a full stop without any warning from the electronics or from ONSTAR . The gas engine just did not start functioning even though the gas tank was three-fourths full. The car stopped in the middle of the right two lanes of the freeway on a very busy Friday morning and I was left in a very UNSAFE and DANGEROUS situation when I could not even leave my car and walk over to the shoulder because of the heavy traffic around me. This car cannot be safely used by families with children. I have asked for a replacement of the whole vehicle but both the dealer (Momentum Chevrolet of San Jose, CA) and GM have been giving me the run-around where there is mis-communication or poor communication between the representatives from the dealer and the GM about this very grave problem.

I took delivery of my special order 2017 Volt Premier mid Sept so I've only owned it approx. 6 weeks and just turned 1000 miles. I charge it on 120 volt outlet 8 amps; and every morning but once the battery has been fully charged averaging about 62 mi EV range to start the day. I am still awaiting my condo's HOA/Board approval to install a 240v charging station. I have not burned a drop of gasoline in the 6 weeks of ownership, except for the auto Engine Maintenance Mode (EMM) where the computer ran the engine for 15 minutes after 1 mo of ownership. I love the Volt, especially all the safety features & adaptive cruise control, Bose sound system. Issues: no power driver's seat; no homelink for gate/garage opener (I had CarToys install Homelink in upper console for approx. $420 which works far better than my portable gate opener; why GM dropped homelink is hard to understand); no ceiling grab handle for driver/front passenger's seats); defrost a little weak as my car fogs up suddenly while driving even with recirculation turned off (Oct was a very wet month this year). Overall very pleased with Volt.

2013 Volt better than 2017

FF, 04/24/2016

We leased the 2013 Volt three years ago and absolutely loved the car and the concept. Our lease was up and we had to explore our options. I absolutely loved the 2013 Volt. Only thing wrong with it is the manual seat adjust until we found out what our buyout option would be. To purchase would be over $10K higher than current fair market value of a 2013 Volt with less than 30K miles. So.. we decided to look at the 2017 models, and sad we leased it. What's worse on 2017: - No reporting of how much energy you are currently using or generating while driving, the 2013 model reported that info right on the driver display. - A real-time visual gauge to let you know whether you are driving efficiently. - Poor rear view visibility. The 2013 model had a small window in the hatchback where the newer "redesign" does not. You only see the tops of cars behind you. - No backup sensor to alert you when you are about to hit something. - NO HOMELINK to open my garage door or gate. What's up with that GM? I had to go out and buy a universal remote to open my garage and hang it off my visor like all cheap cars in the past. Poor execution GM! - Less storage. 2013 model had more storage in the dash, on top, and in the center console. Storage in rear passenger doors. - Poor center console display. It is now angled up so that you see a glare on the screen anytime you are driving during the day. The 2013 did not have the poor angle with a lip over the display to shield it from the sun. - Annoying sound from the engine compartment. Anytime the car is in drive or reverse you hear the annoying sound. You do not hear this from the 2013 model. - Hatchback trunk area storage is smaller than 2013. -Overall quality, everything on the 2017 is just cheaper. The visors (not lighted), controls, and more. What/s better with 2017 model: - Regen paddle on the steering wheel to generate power and slow the vehicle down. - Design of controls on the dash is better with 2017. On the 2013 they were a massive collection of touch controls, of which at first seems futuristic until you keep accidently touching the wrong one. Overall, very disappointed in GM and extremely upset with Ally the previous company used to lease the car. I used to recommend this car to everyone I talked too, I now need to go back and apologize to anyone who purchased a recent model. The whole reason to buy this car is for the electric so as to be energy efficient. All tools to help with driving efficiently in real time have been removed. I am no longer fan, sorry GM.

Wow, just wow. Get the leather, the wheels, the safety package, in black, and you are so set. Paid on a Tesla 3 (wait list) but changed my mind, but may still get Tesla but don't see it happening if price stays up (Tesla needs to sell them for 40k/piece just to break even, so they won't ever make a 3 for less than that and the Volt is a much better value for luxury and ride and reliability) (UPDATE: would never buy from a company that may be gone tomorrow and no longer making parts for a scant 400k cars produced with no after market support for parts..., would be bankruptcy for a lot of people left holding large loans and with a worthless scrap if the computer died or electric drives failed), but the Volts are so much more reliable (look at how many used Teslas have new motors or batteries, there's your first clue). And with the shared cadillac platform, it rides so nice, totally like my CTS caddy. Would do it again in a heart beat. Got mine 2 years old but new for $20k for a $38k car (2017, same spec), I would get yours 3-4 years old for $10k with 75k miles for the best deal. These are super reliable, you will have several warranties and miles to go on powertrain, electric stuff, etc., just not much if any of the comprehensive warranty for little stuff that doesn't break anyway.

2017 Chevrolet Volt LT 4dr Hatchback (gas/electric hybrid DD)

I want to start by saying that I have only had the car for a little over a week. This whole purchase was weird for me. I've been driving a 2014 Ford Taurus SHO which I LOVE. I do trade cars frequently (every couple of years) because I put a lot of miles on my car (500+ per week), but I thought the Taurus might actually be the one I kept until I drove it to the ground. My husband heard about the Chevy Volt on the Clark Howard radio program and was impressed with what he heard. He said he might be a good commuter car for me. I scoffed at him, because why would I want to go to a silly little hatchback when I'm driving this really nice, fast and comfortable car every day. Long story short, we purchased a used 2017 LT with 6,475 miles on it (including a Bosch charger) for 24,500. I really wanted the Premier, but the LT has leather, back-up camera; the only thing I would have like to have was navigation, but I can use Apple Car Play to get it from my phone, and I have a Garmin. I am very surprised with how impressed we are with this vehicle. Is it my Taurus? No, of course not. However, I don't feel like I am missing any power; it rocks up and down the highway. I have a 52 mile commute each way and the availability of a 240v charger at work. So, I've been driving back and forth to work for free; the car is showing 250+ MPG. We picked up the car at a location over 650 miles away. It got 40-42 MPG on the gas tank coming home. I'm 5'6". It's comfortable. It's a very smooth ride. My husband is 6'6". Like any car, he has to bend down to get in, but once he's in, there's plenty of leg room. I'm fascinated with the fact that I'm not stopping at the gas station 2X/week. I went from spending $50/week on gas to $0 during the first week. I started my 4-day work week last week with 1/2 tank of gas. I only used 1/8 tank in a week and still have 137 miles left on the tank. Crazy! The down side? Probably not a "family" vehicle; it does have a minimal back seat. It's still doable though. The side blind spots were a little alarming. I was used to glancing in my side mirrors to change lane in my Taurus, but there is a definite need to glance over your shoulder before you change lanes in the Volt - I almost found that out the hard way! I just ordered some blind spot mirror additions from Amazon. if you're purchasing the Premier with the blind spot alerts, you should be just fine. Not a lot of storage or a huge back seat, but that's okay for me as I don't use the back seat much anyway and my husband drives an Expedition. I also wish it came equipped with a DVD player. But the savings and really hot little hatchback that handles really well trumps all of that. I now wonder why I don't see more of them on the road. They are little pricey new, but the way cars are priced nowadays not so much that they're unaffordable. Chevy should advertise this vehicle more than they do; it's pretty awesome! It's going to be hard to purchase a vehicle that's operated by full gasoline after this. 12/06/17 Update. I've been driving the Volt for about 6 months now and have a little over 25K miles on it. Still love it! Comfortable and great pick-up. Now that the cold weather is here, there is a learning curve on how to best use the climate system to optimize battery life - there is a difference in the cold weather. My heavy foot doesn't help either! Even though my preference would be to drive a larger car or, better yet, an SUV, it's hard to justify that type of purchase with the savings I'm experiencing. 12/06/19 Update. I rented a Nissan Frontier Crew Cab, and it made me realize how much I missed the larger vehicle. I sold my Volt . . . and ended up replacing it with another one. I still prefer the bigger vehicle. I'm an impulse buyer and had he not been presenting me with the simple math that justifies driving a Volt, I would have purchased the larger vehicle. I haven't changed my mind about the Volt. It really is a GREAT car. There is not one thing wrong with it. I'm just a big car kind of gal. Anyway, this time I got in the the beautiful red color with a grey leather interior. This one does have the blind spot monitors, which is a big plus. It really is a shame that 2019 is the last year for the Volt. Not sure why it wasn't more of a success for Chevrolet. Lack of advertising? Anyway, if you can get your hands on a used Volt, I highly recommend it.

Driver side seat knocking noise

I have owned this 2017 Chevy Volt for about a year. In general, I really like the car. I like the instrumentation, and the way it drives, particularly when electrically powered. BUT, the car has had a really annoying knock, coming from the driver seat areas, almost from the time I purchased it. The knock is intermitted, but can be really annoying. I brought the car to the dealership (Momentum Chevrolet, San Jose, CA) to have it be repaired three times (yes, THREE TIMES!). Each time, the repair failed. As final resort I contacted the GM corporate repair line about a month ago. While being quite responsive, they have been virtually useless so far ('the person who has your case is on vacation'; 'they may be a solution for this problem next year'). Needless to say how disappointed both with their ability to serve this can and with my driving experience.

Why did they stop making this fantastic car? It cost me $25,500K, net, for a sporty sedan that beats most $100K performance cars from 0 to 30. Almost never go to the gas station. Drive it 20 miles a day and top it up at a regular plug using night electricity rates. Pay less than half the price of an ICE per mile. Never needed a repair. One oil change in 40,000 miles of mostly EV driving. For the first three years a green HOV lane sticker in CA saved me at least an hour a week. Why did they stop making this fantastic vehicle?

Terrific All-Around Car

This is an awesome vehicle! Not just a great plug-in hybrid, but a great car for everyone! I don't know why Chevy doesn't market this car better. I have never gotten so many compliments and questions from strangers about any previously owned car. First of all it looks and drives sharp. I have the Pearl White which looks beautiful on this car. In the Premier trim at least the interior is very high quality with beautiful leather seats trimmed in a dual saddle/black color. The dash matches the trim so it isn't all black. The controls are well laid out with the exception of the Push to Start button hidden behind the steering wheel stalk. Thanks to the electric motor it has great acceleration and it's low stance makes for excellent handling. Steering is precise and well controlled. Fuel economy is amazing. Because of its 50 mile electric range I don't use any gas unless I go on a road trip. And that's the beauty of the Volt: it also works perfectly as a hybrid car, returning about 40+ mpg even if you never plugged it in. No "range anxiety" -- with the gas engine it has a total range of around 400 miles, just like any car. It is a compact car so if you need more room than a 4 seater with a hatch, this isn't the vehicle for you. The rear seats, however, are very comfortable for 2 adults. Just not 3. On the other hand, because it's a compact, it has excellent handling and maneuvering in tight spaces. I just love it. All the active safety technology is wonderful and works well -- parking sensors, rear camera and cross traffic alert, and blind spot alert. Great sound system too. Only 2 things I would change: no sun roof and no power driver's seat controls. It's pretty perfect. Oh -- and when your lifetime fuel economy says over 100 mpg that's a pretty good feeling!

Cutting Edge

Read reviews to better understand the car and technology. The base LT model met my needs. The car is all electric with range extending gasoline generator if you need it unlike other all electric vehicles. No range anxiety. In one month I put over 1,000 miles on the car and only used 3 gallons of gasoline. It's my commuter car doing 38 miles one way. Battery is rated at 54 miles but in cooler weather it is only charging between 45 - 48 miles. I recharge at work for $1.25 for the one way trip home. Car peaked out at 250+ miles/gallon based on running all electric to and from work. Three negatives, no built-in garage door opener buttons, heating system not very robust, and rear visibility is limited, but the backup camera a real plus. I am 6'2" tall and fit comfortably in this car. I installed a 240 volt charger at home and the car recharges in 4 hours. A very quiet ride and beautiful car to drive. Never thought I would own a Chevy. Drive it and if you can afford it, you will buy one!

Growing up, my dad was always a Ford guy. We've never owned a Chevy as my family believed that Ford was a much superior product to General Motors. Then I had been provided with a 1998 Chevy Astrovan from my last company. That van had all of it's original components and had well over 238k miles and still ran like new. Much greater distance than my 2000 Ford explorer. So I wanted an electric car, but the Bolt was not released by the time VW bought back my stinky diesel, so I bought the Volt. This is the best car I've ever owned. Living in Florida I don't need to use the heat that often, which maximizes my electric Rance. The EPA estimated the range to be 53 miles but I usually get around 62 or 63 EV miles from my car. This allows me to drive everywhere I go on a charge without using gas. The ride quality is amazing and unmatched. The regenerative braking allows you to stop the car without using the brake pads and is blended perfectly with the friction brakes to where you get the regenerative brake assist when heavy braking. It's beautiful. Sport mode makes it twice as powerful but eats your battery much faster. The software in the radio could be better. Android auto is extremely flakey as to whether it will work or not. Customer support for this car is not that great. You still bring it to the local chevy dealer to be worked on, however I'm finding a lot of these guys are not trained to work on this car. It is a plus to have a nation wide dealer to bring your vehicle to though. Comfort is better than most cars I've owned and my biggest complaint is the amount of blind spots, and how low you sit in the car. Makes it very difficult to see around the car or close in front of you. You can raise and lower the seat which helps however, you do have to play around to find the best settings. Overall the car is amazing. Another down side is the charger size. It's awfully slow at 3.3kw. the 2019 model year has an option for the 7.2kw but they cannot tell me it I can upgrade the one I have now to the upgraded charger. The 3.3kw charger will take 4 hours to charge your car. Other than that the car works great for me.

In 2017 I was town between the Volt and it's all electric sister, the Bolt. I went with the Volt due to the lack of charging infrastructure in the North East, thus I didn't want the stress of range anxiety. This car has been rock solid with over 25k miles on her, and only tire rotations and one oil change done thus far. I average over 2k miles per tank, which is truly awesome. Best part , she looks like a normal car, unlike some other hybrids. Buy with confidence!

We had the car for 10 days, 777 miles, had to have it towed twice. Propulsion system malfunction, towed home, did not have it placed close to garage, because we thought we could drive it 20 ft, would not go forward, slipped back, we have a 90ft drive way on incline, slipped back into grass. We left it there overnight, plugged in the car in the morning, still could not move it. Had it towed to Chevy garage, they called next afternoon and said the electronic module that drives car had gone out. Good news GM Said they could get a new one. I paid $37,000 for a car and it already has something wrong. Doesn't give us good feelings, maybe should have bought another Honda, we have had four all had over 100,000 miles with no problems. We really liked the car for the first nine days, hope everything works out. GM bought it back and returned all my money. Bought a Honda Accord.

The technology and lines in this car are excellent. The handling and pick up are really good knowing that is not a sport car. The back seats are not as comfortable as the front ones, but I do not use them. First gas fill was at 1,500 miles with only 7.5 gals. I enjoy driving this car.

Coming from a 2015 Subaru Outback to a 2017 Chevy Volt is a bit of a Jolt to the nerves. I Loved my outback and probably would have continued to drive it but the number of Miles I drive every year leads to me paying almost $3,600 per year for gasoline. With the rebates and incentives from the government for early adopters of electric technology and the recent addition of fast charging to my local market I pulled the trigger. I should of slowed my roll. The Volt IS NOT DC fast charge capable so all the new gas station charging locations are useless and a full charge will never take less than 3.5 hours from empty. That is a bummer as I drive between 70 and 350 miles a day. Since Pure Electric will never be an option the Volt made sense if I could recharge during my lunch break. The Climate Controls suck. You will be cold in the winter and Hot in the summer or your battery range will be pathetic. The adaptive cruse control and lane keep assist are nice but my 2 year old Subaru had them beat flat out. There is no easy way to turn off the display for night driving. I wish one automaker would make that a home screen button it is so much easier to drive in the dark without a 9" LED blaring at you. That being said after getting my Level 2 Charger at home I am happy with the daily cost to operate and the stereo sounds Awesome. Onstar wifi is fast and my kids love using it in the car. I should have waited till the next model year perhaps they will offer power seats and fast charging. Till then I have a Volt that is quiet and very peppy while operating under electric only. It sure is nice to pull into the gas station and only be able to put in 4 gallons of gas and charging it only costs about $1.50 a day. Fast forward a couple of years and I own a Tesla Model X. The local superchargers work and all my volt complaints are erased. - A Few Years Later... My son now owns a Chevy Volt as his bridge to a Tesla as well.

We currently have two 2017 Volts (both are Premier). One has been fantastic. However, the other one (the car covered by this review) started having serious problems only a few weeks after we got it. A new car should be reliable; instead, this one has been the source of a lot of hassle, inconvenience & expense. It has been in the shop off & on now for over a month. Meanwhile, both GM and the dealer have done a poor job of dealing with these problems and our concerns. Really a shame, as we would have loved to give this car a glowing review (with 5 stars all around).

I own a 2013 Volt as well as a new 2017premier. Someone who makes decisions at Chevy is not driving theVolt. If they were some of the items I would have liked on my 2013 and what changed on the 2017 are.......2013 no power seats, really gas mileage????.....Everyone does not need or want Sirius radio crap......2017 with limited vision to the outside of the car why did they get rid of the small window in trunk, it didn't help much, but it was nice to view something to see outside instead of a dark cave....again no power seats, shame on Chevy, Chevy took away the garage buttons, did GM run out of parts, side mirrors seem smaller, I still do not want Sirius radio, no cd player(Chevy, people still have CD's),music storage on the usb could have a better system to present the song titles and playlists, Chevy cut back the Onstar service from 3years to 6 months, Chevy charging $995 for Pearls paint, but it looks exactly like white (our 2013 was a beautiful Pearl color), I like the touch buttons better than the manual buttons for volume and fan, the airflow settings are confusing, you have to press multiple combinations of buttons to get the correct flow setting, the speedometer setup is hidden by the steering wheel, it could have been placed a little lower, Chevy forces you to purchase items installed by the dealer, anyone want to purchase a$595 extension cord? and last I liked the individual look of the 2013 body, the 2017 looks like so many other cars on the road

I bought a brand new, fresh off the truck, 2017 Chevy Volt Premier, most all options. It broke down, suddenly, with a lot of popping sounds, smells, multiple malfunctions, dead engine and rapid deceleration. I was on the freeway with no shoulder. The car had only 140 miles and it was the first time the gas engine came on. Chevy says they fixed it and it appears to run like it should, which is fantastic. If it goes a couple thousand without the defect(s) recurring, then I would assume it was a fluke. Otherwise, I could argue it is the best car, it most important measures, made. In October 2017, they did multiple recalls to address the issue. The dealer was unacceptably confused by the recall and somehow managed to give me an invoice that said it was done- then notified me to bring it back because they made a mistake and it really wasn't accomplished. For a new car at $35000 in this decade, I think this is pretty mickey-mouse. On the other hand, the car goes about 58 miles on 14.5 kWh and seems to work fine at 16000 miles and 18 months driven.
