...& the only other reviewer's car is white too - drives like a smaller sports car in the twistys & a larger luxury car over bumps - won't buy another car w/out magnetic ride & heads up display - this modern sleeper is a wonderful long trip highway car that devours fuel - the 392 Hemi cars are a tick quicker & a bit faster, yet the SS is way more nimble & refined - roomy well finished leather/suede interior w/fake buckle holes in the comfortable front seats & slow to respond touchscreen - fit & finish are good & the paint resists chips - I like that I haven't seen another on the road - low production no bad boy understated sheet metal w/a bit much chrome - love the car, wonder about resale -

I purchased a 2015 Heron White Chevrolet SS. I was originally going to buy an Impala, but I saw the SS sitting in the dealer's lot and when I asked the salesman about it he said it had been there for about three months and no one really asked about it. Long Story short: Sat, Drove purchased and I am in love with it. I can tell you some of the great features you can not even find in other cars more expensive than this: Red Light Camera warning system, full size spare and to me this is probably the best car GM has ever made. I like the fact that it looks like a Malibu so I can very easily sneak up on other cars and pass them quickly especially on the Penn Turnpike.

Almost 10 years with Chevy SS

It's now ten years and just turned thirty eight thousand trouble free miles with my 2015 SS. Chevy/Holden put together a onetime winner. I still believe you'll have to go to far and wide to find something close to the SS. It's a keeper. It's difficult to come up with anything that would change my mind. It truly has been a joy to drive, with carefree miles. If you like comfort, performance, rear wheel drive four door family sedan then this is your car. The SS can be compared to the BMW5 (have both) favorably. Front and rear seat are very comfortable with plenty of room in the rear seats. Performance can be compared to the BMW m5, I think the SS is more fun to drive. Brakes are outstanding, love the heads up display and the magnetic ride control. The SS is simply a real sweetheart of a car. If you're looking for gas mileage above 22 mpg then you'll be looking at something else. I'll be keeping this SS for many years because there's nothing like it. What a sleeper.

I was searching for something that would meet up to my old car. I had a 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo - SS SC with all the bells and whistles, comforts and get up and go that I wanted in a car. I test drove 8 different vehicles within the price range I was willing to pay. Although the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 both came close - you see those cars at every turn - everyone owns one. I wanted something different than the rest on the road. I also had great luck with the Chevrolet, so decided to go back to the Chevrolet dealer to see what else they might have comparable to the Monte Carlo. I test drove an Impala - too big and not enough take off. I test drove a Cadillac - it was comfortable enough, had pretty good take off - but to get heated seats - it was going to cost approximately another $10,000 - not worth it. I had already test drove a Camaro - awesome power - but my gosh that thing was so cramped and uncomfortable to ride in - it was all about the engine and the great looking outside. So I decided I would try the Chevy SS - and am I glad I did - Oh what Fun!! The one I test drove was a manual and it was great, however, I have gotten lazy over the years, was used to an automatic and didn't want to shift gears anymore - besides it was an unattractive blue. If it had been that beautiful dark navy blue I've seen in the Dodge - I might have considered it. However, I am partial to a black car. Since the closest dealer with a black automatic SS was an hour away in hell traffic, I bit the bullet to go and test drive one. It was worth the drive - although I didn't like the price they offered and left the dealership. But I couldn't stop thinking about that car. It took a couple of days for the dealership to call me and ask what I didn't like about the car. I explained that I liked the car but here is how I work - I offer them a price, they don't add on all of their extras that I don't want and then I will decide what I need to put down and borrow for a loan. I gave them an offer. They didn't take what I offered, but came back with a price I was willing to pay. No, there is nothing fancy about the car, it doesn't have the distinct look of a bad boy Camaro - yes, everyone thinks at first that it's an Impala, but I don't mind. It's a tad smaller than my Monte Carlo, which I wanted. Yes, it's a gas hog, but that's to be expected - I am hoping it will get better once I decide I am done testing it's power. You might think it is a grandma car (and I am a grandma) however, when I go blasting passed them on the highway, they know by the sound and the speed that it's not your ordinary grandma car. I was actually sad leaving my Monte Carlo at the dealership - but after two days - my SS and I are doing just fine! As of June 2017 I have owned the car a year and I still love it and it's still fun to drive. I am glad I made the choice of the Chevy SS - it may not look like a beast - but it feels great!! I was asked to update my review - Today is January 2018 and still love my car!! Still loved my car when it was totaled on 10/05/2018!! Sad day, however, the car did it's job and saved my life! I would have bought another one if there had been a new one out there, no luck...so life goes on.

I absolutely love this car. Its understated looks, great driving experience, advanced technology, and luxurious interior all for about 45k. The best thing about this car is its exhaust. Any complaints you have will be washed away once you start the car up. Performance is top notch and with the understated looks it's not a cop magnet. In fact the look on peoples faces when you floor it or start it up near them is priceless. However there are some downsides. Build quality is not quite the best but all the touch points are soft. The gas mileage is poor especially in the city. I get about 11 mpg with the auto. Speaking of the transmission it is very smooth but when you want to downshift with the paddles, it will take a second. There are various other very small complaints but they do not matter in the big picture of this car. If you are looking for a sedan around 40-50k I strongly urge you to go with this car. Overall-9/10

Update: After nearly 7 years and 63,500 miles of ownership, I still smile every time I hit the start button and the LS3 comes to life. The exhaust note in Sport, Performance or Track mode opens the baffles in the exhaust for a great sound without being obnoxious. It's also nice to flip to touring to quiet it down a little and smooth out the bumps when cruising on the interstate. Highs include: handling; accelleration; engine/exhaust rumble; subtle styling that doesn’t scream sports car; versatility of having a large trunk and 4-doors; and owning a car that you rarely see on the road. Lows include: no Homelink, so you are stuck with a clunky garage door opener remote; the 6-speed automatic is very dated, and overall not very responsive to the 415 hp and 415 lb/ft of torque begging to come out and play; the Magnetic ride shocks are great but also are known to fail when the seals begin to leak - I’ve replaced both rear shocks and about to replace both fronts after barely 60k miles; and lastly, since production ended with the 2017 model year and the Holden plant in Australia closed permanently, parts are increasingly harder to obtain. Overall, finding this car with a 20% GM discount tag in 2016 made it the best performance sedan for the money, and one of the few rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated V8's left. The fuel economy is terrible, but no one could realistically expect different. Huge plus - the car has held its value. As of May 2023, I have a trade-in offer for $3,500 less than what I paid new (before tax, title, license).

We never owned a Chevy in the past but when I was forced back into the car market thanks to VW TDI scandal I decided I wanted a sedan with rear wheel drive and a MANUAL transmission something no longer offered in the Passat, Mazda M6, or Nissan Maxima all of which I would have seriously considered. Thanks to a google search I found the Chevy SS and do not regret this purchase. In fact, the more I drive the car, the more I love it. My husband and I are now fighting over driving the SS so we are considering purchasing a second as Chevy is still offering 20% off until the end of the October. This car becomes extinct in 2017 and, sadly, I fear a manual transmission sedan will go with it. Update 4/19/2017: I passed this Chevy SS to my husband and we found a red Chevy SS that still had the 20% off tag which we purchased in November 2016. No more fighting over the car! We both love it. I enjoy the car more now than when I first purchased. I understand that it is not for everyone, but it is perfect for me. October 2017 update: we still own both Chevy SS cars and absolutely still love them. I had an issue with my power steering which Chevy repaired as was still under warranty and my only gripe is the dealership which bumbled with the repair (ordering the wrong part then not ordering all the parts needed) causing a delay in the repair. My car was at the dealership for over a week and I was never offered a loaner car. Thankfully I own 4 vehicles but it would have been considerate to at least offer a vehicle.

Needed a new car, thanks to the VW TDI scandal and it just so happened to coincide with the elimination of my 110 mile round-trip commute. As a car enthusiast, I was looking for something fun to drive that also could haul the family in comfort. With fuel economy no longer a factor, I landed on the SS. My dealer couldn't locate a 6M in black, silver or blue within a 250 mile radius that also had the 20% off MSRP tag, so I ended up with an automatic. I was able to enjoy the summer tires for the first 800 miles before swapping them out for Michelin Ice Xi3 snow tires on 18" wheels. 1200 miles on the snow tires has been surprisingly good, and not all that different than my Passat TDI on the same tires. Of course the best part is firing up that big, throaty V8 and hitting the nearest on-ramp for a quick blast to 70+ mph. With the summer OEM tires back on, handling, braking, and acceleration instantly improved and I am enjoying this car every time I drive it. I have found the Performance setting to provide the best responsiveness for the automatic transmission and it handles excellent. Touring and Sport cause the auto to be very slow to respond on downshifts. With 2017 being the last model year for this modern day V8, RWD muscle car and fewer than 15,000 of these cars imported to the U.S. since the 2014's first came over, the opportunity to own a unique piece of Chevy history is running out. I'm very happy that I was able to pick one up and use it as my daily driver.

The Chevy SS (Holden Commodore down under) is an amazing car. It can go to the track for some hot laps then stop by the grocery store on the way home. It's a very well integrated package of performance, luxury and utility/usefulness. The controls are firm, but they feel just right for this big car and it drives smaller than it actually is. The 415hp LS3 V8 is a gem, but it's thirsty as a daily driver, so far about 17 mpg. This car has less than year of production remaining as 2017 is the "last call". If you want a new one, better act quickly! Update! 10,115 miles now and the Chevy SS continues to impress. Problems have been limited to 2 screws in the tires, one of which was not repairable. Fuel economy continues to improve, a few tanks have been 19.0-19.5 mpg. The radio reception for non-satellite stations is not the best, had the dealer re-set the system, which did seem to help a little. The MRC drive settings (Tour-Sport-Perf) and the dual mode exhaust give this car multiple personalities. Each is unique and well sorted. Very few people know this car and it's nearly "invisible" in the daily commute, which is exactly the way I prefer. One time you will get some attention is at the gas station after a fill-up. When re-starting the car, the next guy next to you looks over and thinks......."that sure doesn't sound like a Malibu?" Update- 18,900 mi. One year in and still pleased with the SS. It drives as well now as it did when new and the fuel economy has been steady between 18.5-19.5mpg (70% hwy). The OE Bridgestone RE050A tires have been better than expected. They have great grip and have lasted longer than I figured? They only have a 140 tread wear so to make it to 20K is not bad. I plan on keeping this car for the long term, but will likely get a small 35-40 mpg. daily driver to try and keep some of the commuter miles off this car. Update - 27005 miles and going strong. Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires went on at 19,800 and they are outstanding. Smoother, quieter ride than the OE rubber, but still tremendous grip and responsiveness. Fuel economy recently has been steady at about 18-18.5. Wear & tear? The car is holding up pretty well. The interior, specifically the seats, are wearing much better than most GM cars/trucks. Would I buy it again? Absolutely. 4 years and 36K now on the SS and all is well. A 2012 Volt took over as a daily driver in 2018, but this car is always eager to run when called upon. More recently these cars are commanding very strong money, so in addition to being a great driving car, it's also a nice investment. The SS now has about 39K, so it's been a living easy the last several years. The car still drives great and as the years go by, fewer and fewer are seen, so if you want something unique, this is it.

If you're lucky enough to find a manual transmission car, buy it! I traded in a loaded Camaro 2SS for my SS and three years later, I have no regrets. Fun car to drive and I love the mag-ride suspension. The car gets as much attention at cruise nights as a Ferrari and gets close to 30mpg on the highway if you keep it under 70. Lots of room in this car too, I'm 6'4 and 290lbs, an adult can ride behind me without my moving my seat up. I am pleased with how well the car has aged almost 5 years. The cost to own it is relatively low considering the resale value five years later is about 80% of what I paid for it and it’s only needed oil changes and tires. I’m still very happy with the SS. Update: 7 years old and worth what I paid for it new! The SS has been a great car for my family. I have about 24k miles on the car and no issues besides a few recalls as far as service. It’s been great fun owning the SS thus far and I’m sure these cars will be this era’s LS6 Chevell.

My favorite car ever

I would change a few things about this car. First the cup holder can interfere with shifting with even a modestly tall cup. Next, since I'm over 55 it sits a bit too low to the ground for me. That makes it hard to get out of the car at times, but the programmable seats can cure this a bit. Finally, the A-frame pillar occasionally obstructs the driver's view. I've almost had 2 collisions due to this factor. Otherwise, it's been my favorite car of all time. It's a real joy to drive. Great mix of power and it's somewhat luxurious. It's a real shame that 2017 is the last year for this great ride. Oh well, at least I'll have mine for as long as I want. I still get fired up at that exhaust note when I crank her up.

Racecar capabilities in a full-size sedan

Thom, 06/19/2018
2016 Chevrolet SS 4dr Sedan (6.2L 8cyl 6A)
2 of 2 people found this review helpful

I love shifting my own gears and have always owned cars with manual transmissions. But as I progressed from 2-seaters to mid-size sports sedans to full-size sports sedans over the years, manual transmissions became harder to find. In 2016, there was only one choice for a full-size sports sedan capable of the name that offered a manual transmission and that happened to be the Chevrolet SS. However, the Chevrolet SS is an overkill for me in terms of acceleration and top speed capabilities for which I have never found nor do I anticipate a situation to use such capabilities, but it's nice to know they are there. I do occasionally enjoy accelerating in traffic a "little" faster than most fellow motorist can, and find cornering at speed on twisty roads very confidence inspiring and exhilarating. I've had my 2016 SS for just over two years and 20,000 very enjoyable miles and have had no mechanical problems. Unfortunately, the Chevrolet SS was made for only four years from 2014-2017 and is now discontinued. I highly recommend the Chevrolet SS to those who have needs similar to mine, but now you have to buy a used one. And beware that this is a full-size performance sports sedan on the order of a BMW M5 or Porsche Panamera for half the cost. It is powered by a big old school GM push-rod V8 and is not very easy on gas.

Drove the first '15 at the dealer the day it came off the truck, and loved it at first sight/drive - especially because it was a 6-speed manual! Kept going round and round, but as GM supplier, there were better deals on other cars, but no other car like it - maybe at ATS-V + $25k. Didn't do anything. Then last week, "stumbled" on info on the net about a GM 15% discount on selected '15 left-overs, and the SS was on the list. Went to my dealer's site, and behold, the Heron White '15 was still there less 15%, + an additional discount because the owner had put 1,000 miles on the odometer - to good to be true?? Nope, what they advertised was the real cost - no gimmicks. One downside - automatic transmission. For the kind of discount that I got, I can handle driving an automatic. I bought it!!! Had it for less than a week, but love driving it - can't wait to put lots more miles on it!! I'm a serious car person, and I can tell you you'd be hard pressed to find a similar car in any price range, especially when you throw in the manual transmission option. I was on the Holden website this morning, need to bring the Ute into the U.S., what a sweet El Camino (us old folks can remember that name), And, somehow, GM need to keep Holden alive, they've got too much bad history shutting down good divisions.

This is the funnest, most enjoyable car I have ever owned. It is comfortable, easily seating two adults or three children in the back seat. The ride in Tour mode is very smooth and quiet. Switch to Sport or Competition mode and it tightens right up. I have driven across Nevada at speeds somewhat in excess of the posted speed limit and loved it. I have driven through the Rocky Mountains and had sheer joy. The transmission is smooth, the steering feel is responsive. The engine is powerful and sounds beautiful. The best family sedan that is equally at home on date night, grocery run, or leaping from one road to the next.

The driving experience is awesome! Roomy, I am 6'3" 300lbs and I have plenty of room for me and my family. Power is stealthy and really comes on in the upper rpms. Color is phenomenal slipstream blue😎

Front tires don't last

Front tires have to be replaced every 13,000 miles abnormal wear. Had alignment checked at two chevy dealers and told it is in specs. Car has been always driven in more of a family car manor (very conservatively). Neither company dealer gives any reason for poor tire wear, zero warranty. Need to budget .06 a mile just to keep front tires on it. Heating and AC much to noise! My farm tractor is much more quiet.

Best sleeper out there. I once had a guy in a Malibu that wasn't going to let me pass. I still laugh about that one. It was so fun smoking past him and seeing the look on his face! Most people have no idea what it is or what it can do. But the ones who know and get it always give a thumbs or a positive comment. I parked and walked in the post office and a guy leaving came back in just to tell me what a nice SS I had. I bought mine as a one owner, Black, full size spare. Had 95000 miles when I got it. Has 111000 miles 9 months later. Still runs like a dream. I even drove it in the snow. I was shocked how good it did. I have a 99 Camaro that I love too but the SS will leave the LS1 in the dust. I bought it to drive and I'm really enjoying my SS. You can't go wrong with one of these.
