The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox remains relatively unchanged after a mild refresh for the 2016 model year. And even though the Equinox hasn't had a major redesign since 2010, it remains competitive against a number of more recently updated rivals in the hot compact crossover SUV market segment. Obviously the Chevy's style appeals to large numbers of buyers seeking a relatively affordable, easy-to-drive, comparatively spacious small utility vehicle.
The only significant updates for 2017 are the name change of the former LTZ trim level to the new Premier and the addition of two special models, the Sport Edition and the Midnight Edition, each available as an add-on to the LT trim with Convenience Package. Both come with black interior and exterior touches, a few extra convenience features and unique wheels. The only significant difference between the two is the Summit White paint on the Sport and the Mosaic Black Metallic finish on the Midnight model.
Base power for the Equinox remains the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. Although this power output is similar to that of most of its competitors, the Equinox lags a bit behind average for the segment in acceleration. Luckily, it's one of the few compact crossovers to o_TEffer a six-cylinder option. The available 3.6-liter V6 makes a healthy 301 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque, which will be appreciated by buyers who like a bit of extra performance or who plan to use their vehicles for towing or hauling cargo.
Both engines come mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which remains unchanged from the previous year. And buyers still have the option of ordering all-wheel drive on all Equinox models except the entry-level L.
Although last year's update improved the quality of many interior materials, the inside of the Equinox remains utilitarian, rather than luxurious, although the perforated leather seating surfaces on the Premier trim level do add a premium touch. Passenger accommodations are excellent. There's plenty of leg- and hiproom as well as shoulderroom in both the front and rear seats, with the 60/40-split folding rear seats providing extra versatility. But the price you'll pay for passenger comfort is the cargo area: The Equinox trails its primary competitors in storage space.
The front-wheel drive Equinox with the four-cylinder engine is EPA rated at 25 mpg combined (21 city/31 highway). Upgrading to the six-cylinder powerplant with front-wheel drive drops the EPA rating to 20 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway).
The base L trim level equips the Equinox with an array of convenience and safety features, such as a rear-vision camera, air conditioning and a six-speaker audio system. Moving up to the LS and LT models adds even more comfort and technology, while the Premier level piles on the niceties, like heated leather seats, remote start and automatic climate control.
