Overview

Redesigned just last year, the Chevy Colorado offers the latest technology, style and trends in the midsize truck segment. Chevy narrowed the configuration options of the Colorado last year so it's now available only with a four-door cab and a 5-foot bed. Five trim levels are offered, in both two- and four-wheel drive. One engine is available: a turbocharged 2.7-liter four cylinder in two different outputs. New this year is the Bison Edition, an off-road/overlanding-focused trim.

Edmunds spotlight: Bison Edition turns off-road capability up to 11

The Bison Edition is an off-road package that can be added to the already highly capable ZR2 trim Colorados. It's designed to further enhance the truck's off-road ability by increasing ground clearance and approach, departure and breakover angles. The Bison Edition is a collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles, which supplies the truck's front and rear bumpers, wheels and skid plates. The 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels house 35-inch mud-terrain tires and contribute to the Bison's 12.2 inches of ground clearance. There's also a set of tubular rocker protectors to keep your Bison from damaging its vulnerable underbelly. And the Bison Edition includes all the crucial equipment from the ZR2, namely the 3-inch lift, wider stance, Multimatic dampers, and locking front and rear differentials.

Competitors to consider

The redesigned Colorado has raised the bar for midsize trucks. But by virtue of being the first of three new trucks to debut in a 12-month period it's vulnerable to being outmatched — on paper, at least. Ford's new Ranger and Toyota's Tacoma are also worth considering. Both offer similarly capable off-road versions, updated powertrains and breakthrough features. And if you're looking for a truck that forgoes off-road intentions in service of practicality, efficiency and comfort, the Honda Ridgeline continues to be a smart pick too.

How does the Colorado drive? Traditional body-on-frame trucks like the Colorado have come a long way in terms of driving and handling. The 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is responsive when you press on the gas and makes plenty of low-end torque, which is helpful for city driving and towing alike. The transmission shifts smoothly and quickly, and the brakes provide sufficient stopping power for emergency braking and are easy to modulate for smooth stops.

Our test truck was a mild-mannered Z71 trim. Even so, it was sure-footed and fun to drive in the dirt. Buyers willing to give up a bit of on-road comfort for a lot more capability off the beaten path will definitely enjoy the Trail Boss and ZR2 versions.

How comfortable is the Colorado? The Colorado is a surprisingly comfortable pickup. It doesn't feel too stiff when it's unladen and manages to smooth out bumps in the road well. It's also relatively quiet inside. Trucks with chunky off-road tires tend to transmit a lot of road noise into the cabin, but our Colorado Z71 truck was pretty quiet compared to other midsize trucks. At highway speeds, however, wind noise coming off the front pillar and windscreen is very noticeable.

We would have liked more comfortable seats too. The cushions are flat and too firm for long-distance drives and lack sufficient lateral support and lumbar adjustment. As for the climate system, the fans are strong and the controls are a cinch to understand and operate, even with gloves on.

How’s the interior? The Colorado's interior is well thought out. Most of the control buttons and knobs are chunky and easy to find with just a glance. It's clear Chevy spent real time and effort on this cabin. There is a lot of hard plastic around, but it should hold up well after years of hard use.

We don't like that the headlight control has been moved into the touchscreen and has no redundant physical switch, but Chevy likely assumed that most buyers will leave it in auto and never touch it. Thankfully, visibility is good and the Colorado doesn't have massive truck-like blind spots. The front of the cabin feels spacious and open, but taller backseat riders might struggle for knee room.

Technology

How’s the tech? The Colorado is the last word in tech when it comes to this segment of trucks. The screens inside are bright and crystal-clear, and the instrument panel is configurable with multiple views. Google's Android software powers the infotainment system and the Chevy is all the better for it. Its voice recognition is intuitive and easy to use, there's Alexa on board for Amazon users, and you get wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Many driver aids are also available, such as blind-spot warning, lane keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. The available 360-degree camera system makes parking and navigating tight off-road trails easier.

Towing and Storage

How are the towing and storage? Storage in the Colorado is mediocre. The door pockets are too small to be of any real use, and the compartment underneath the rear bench is nice but doesn't offer much in the way of storage (though it does offer a 60/40 split). The center console is deep, however, and there's a divider included that makes it a two-level space, which is nice. We also appreciate the little phone slots that have been integrated into the cupholders.

Where the Colorado makes a big impression is towing and hauling. When properly equipped, the Colorado can tow up to 7,700 pounds, the most in its class. It also has an optional tow package that monitors your trailer's mileage and can diagnose issues with it. Its max payload is rated at 1,685 pounds, right near the top of the midsize truck class. It also offers a neat in-tailgate storage area and a 240-volt household outlet in the bed for powering smaller household appliances.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates the Colorado will get between 16 to 22 mpg in combined city/highway driving depending on the configuration. We tested a Z71 trim, which has 4WD and a 20 mpg estimate. On our real-world evaluation route, the Colorado just edged out the EPA's combined estimate, netting 21.5 mpg. That's right on par with other trucks in this class, and if you find yourself in the new Colorado, you should be able to hit the EPA's figures reliably.

Is the Colorado a good value? The Colorado's interior is well built. It's obvious Chevy put some effort and money into the materials and fit and finish. The Colorado's upper trim levels can get a bit expensive, but we think you're getting your money's worth considering the truck's capabilities and features.

The Colorado's warranty is on par with other midsize trucks. Basic coverage stretches across three years/36,000 miles, while the drivetrain warranty covers five years/60,000 miles. Rust coverage extends to six years/100,000 miles. You also get five years/60,000 miles of road side assistance and one year of free maintenance from Chevrolet.

The Colorado's latest styling looks tough and still friendly. When you're behind the wheel the Colorado feels like a partner — that one co-worker who you always look forward to seeing. It's also easy to live with, be in, and drive around, even on crowded city streets. It's also worth noting that, in just one week with our test truck, we received more compliments on it than we typically get with Porsches and high-end BMWs. Clearly the latest Colorado is a bit of a crowd-pleaser.

Which Colorado does Edmunds recommend?

Unless off-road capability is so important to you that it justifies significantly more cost, we think the value-packed LT trim is the way to go. We recommend adding the LT Convenience package II, which adds the higher-output engine, heated front seats, wireless phone charging and more.

Chevrolet Colorado models

The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado is a midsize truck available only as a four-door crew cab with a short bed (5 feet). There are five trim levels to choose from: WT (Work Truck), LT, Trail Boss, Z71 and ZR2. Every Colorado is powered by a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine available in two output levels. The base version is called Turbo (237 horsepower, 260 lb-ft of torque) and is standard on the WT and LT. The highest-output TurboMax (310 hp, 430 lb-ft) is optionally available on the WT and LT and is standard on the Trailboss, Z71 and ZR2. An eight-speed automatic is the only available transmission. The Trail Boss, Z71 and ZR2 are only offered with four-wheel drive, but the WT and LT can be configured with two-wheel drive. 2023 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 4dr Crew Cab 4WD SB (2.7L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

Love the truck but it’s been at the dealer more than my house. Over the air update killed the battery and then the radio and dash. Dealer has had it for 3 months and barely got the Radio and dash to update and turn back on. Still has theft deterant error. GM is buying it back. In my opinion GM attempted too much technology without the necessary hardware upgrades.

When manufacturers redesign a midsize pickup, they have a single target: the Toyota Tacoma. It has, in many ways, been the standard bearer for midsize pickups for decades thanks to proven reliability, rugged durability and constant evolution. And a new version is due in 2024. Like the Colorado the Taco will use a turbocharged four-cylinder in differing outputs (228 hp, 270 hp and 278 hp). An electrified hybrid version will be the top performer at 326 horsepower. There will be multiple off-road-oriented TRD versions and, unlike the Colorado, multiple bed and cab configurations.

Chevrolet Trax vs. Ford Ranger

The current-generation Ranger (2023 model year) was released outside the U.S. in 2011, so it's definitely showing its age in areas like ride quality and interior design. But an all-new version is coming for 2024. The new Ranger will be available in two- or four-wheel drive and with two engines — a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder (270 hp) and a turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 (315 hp), slightly topping the Colorado's 310 horsepower. We expect these trucks to be as well matched in reality as they are on paper, though the Raptor Ranger will offer significantly more power (405 hp) than any version of the Colorado.

Chevrolet Trax vs. Honda Ridgeline

Like the Colorado the Ridgeline comes in only a single cab and bed configuration (double cab, 5-foot-3 bed). Unlike the Colorado, the Ridgeline isn't a truck in many ways. It shares a platform with Honda's Pilot SUV, which uses unibody (carlike) stamped-steel construction rather than a traditional body-on-frame truck layout. This makes it less capable off-road and reduces its towing capacity relative to the Colorado. But the Ridgeline's car-like demeanor endows it with better handling, ride quality, usable space, and fuel economy than traditional trucks.
