1st vehicle it would hurt me to give up!

This is the first vehicle I have ever owned that it would truly hurt to give up. I bought it new 184000 miles ago and its been great, Outside of normal maintaince, I had the rear locking differential replaced at 140000 miles. The versatility of the midgate makes it so I can haul 4 x 8 drywall with 12' long 2 by 4's on top of them, sticking between the front seats, all out of the weather. Its great for hauling the grocerys, moving a kid to college or taking 5 full sized adults on a trip. Towing is ok, ride and comfort is better than any car or minivan that I ever owned.

Cargo Compartment Door Latch

I was an unlikely convert to Chevy. Having been a Toyota and Honda owner in the past, I have come to appreciate reliability. However, I test drove the Avalanche and fell in love with it, and bought one. But I have a concern: is it a faulty build or design? On two occassions while driving my Avi, the cargo bed door has open by itself. On one accasion, I actually had it locked with the key. Has any othe rperson experienced this, or is something wrong with Avalanche?

One of the best riding and driving vehicles I have ever owned. Awesome power and torque. Gas mileage is not bad for all the cubic inches you get. A good all around vehicle. I would definately buy another one.

Bought my Avalanche with 12K miles in 2003, it now has 167K and going strong. Considering the miles, other than routine things like, brakes, shocks, oil and tires, this truck has broken down very little. I had some front end work done, pitman arm and ball joints at about 100k, and a knock sensor at 150K. I replace the water pump at 150K because the gasket was leaking and I had to remove it to do the gasket. The original brakes lasted 100k. Still on the original alternator, radiator, exhaust etc.

My Avalanche has proven to be everything that I expected. All of the cargo space is very useful, we can fit our 3 kids in back easily, it gives a very smooth ride, and the gas mileage is better than I had expected (16-17 religiously). The back seat is roomy enough for 3 adults to sit in.

I bought my truck new, I now have 316K miles on my truck and I still love it, you would never know this truck has so many miles on it, it still looks and runs like new,of course we've taken good care of it, from what I understand they don't make the Avalanche anymore and I guess I know why because they just keep driving on and on with no problems. I have sold my avalanche awhile ago now the people we sold it to drive it everyday to work, now that we’ve bought a new car my husband regrets selling my avalanche everyday, if they start making them again I can’t imagine what the price would be, I’m sure out of reach for retired people like us 😔

I purchased a 2002 Avalanche a few months ago. I must say, WOW! I absolutely love it. Probably the most comfortable vehicle I have ever had. Thankfully the previous owner was very very nice to it. Great versatility for a full size truck. I absolutely am getting a newer Avalanche for my next vehicle. Don't believe what you read, this truck is absolutely great.

This is a great truck. I've carried a Harley in the back and pulled a 10K travel trailer through the mountains (not the same time). The plus side of the setup is your friends don't look at it as a truck when they move even though it has all the ability. The only gripe is the 8.1L engines oil consumption is high. One qt in 3K miles when new, three qts in 3K now. Chevy claimed in 2002 one qt in 100 miles was considered high anything less is acceptable. Big engine is great for towing, stomp on the pedal and she jumps even at 70mph. Down side is MPG 11 around town 14 on the highway at 75mph. I would replace with same truck smaller V8 but right now I'll drive it until the wheels fall off.

This truck has it all! It looks great and the ride is even better! The inside of the vehicle is well built and everything is within easy reach. Had only one problem with a CV joint but its a 7 year old truck stuff will break eventually. And the best part is I still get 16-18 miles a gallon with this giant!

I drive this truck about 80 miles/day. I love driving this truck. I used to drive my motorcycle to/from work. It is more fun to drive my truck. I now have 120,000 miles and it has only been in the shop once. The transmission oil pump exploded destroying the transmission at 91,160 miles, 1,160 miles off of my extended warranty.

Vehicle's first engine began to smoke heavily during start up the first week we owned it. GM said it was defective PCV. After that didn't fix it, they finally replaced the motor. The dealer's quality on this engine swap was terrible. My test drive off the dealer repai lot revealed a heavy knocking sound from the passenger side of new engine. GM had to replace engine again and have aera rep supervise the installation. I doubt that Toyota or Honda would have had to replace the motor twice!

This has been a great truck to drive and work with. It tows an 6000 lbs boat with no issue. I can take the whole family with me on a Ski trip or outing without having to pack the luggage, skis, hockey, baseball, and soccer equipment on top of the kids or leave them in the bed for the elements to have their way with. I use the truck to get back and forth to my construction job and find the side boxes very useful for my smaller tools and the bed is great for all the heavy equipment, add to that the fact that you can lock everything up and secure it for the night all together with the alarm on is great. I do have a vibration in my back end that no mechanics seam to be able to find or explain.

I'VE PURCHASED 7 NEW CARS IN THE PAST 12 YEARS AND THIS BY FAR IS THE MOST DEPENDABLE VEHICLE I'VE OWNE INCLUDING A MAZDA, HONDA, NISSAN, SUBARU AND 3 FORDS. I'VE TOWED MY TRAVEL TRAILER ON 2 LONG TRIPS INCLUDING YELLOW STONE PARK WITH MY AVALANCE, THE RIDE WAS VERY COMFORTABLE. MY AVALANCHE HAS ONLY BEEN TO THE DEALER ONE TIME FOR A SHOCK REPLACEMENT. BY FAR THE BEST VEHICLE I'VE OWNED AND WILL TRADE FOR ANOTHER AVALANCHE EVENTUALLY. THE GAS MILEAGE IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS MY SUBARU OUTBACK I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER FORD. UNFORTUNATELY I HAD MANY MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THEM. THIS IS THE FIRST CHEVY I HAVE EVER PURCHASED AND I'M VERY IM- PRESSED.

I love my truck. It's ultra comfortable, even for several people on long rides (I drove two other adults and my two young sons in car seats on a 9 hour trip and no one complained.) I have the Z71 package, but it still rides much smoother than a truck, and because it sits a little lower I prefer it to the ride of my wife's Tahoe. I love the versatility of this truck. I can pack in my whole family and go buy anything I need at the Home Depot, or haul a load of wood or whatever I want. I love the look of the Avalanche, wonderfully odd styling stands out from the crowd. Haven't had any mechanical problems whatsoever with the truck. Interior is "no frils" but very functional.

MY HUSBAND AND I PURCHASED THE AVALANCHE AS MY PRIMARY VEHICLE FOR COMFORT AND SAFETY REASONS BECAUSE WE HAVE TWO DAUGHTERS, QUADS AND OFF- ROADING EQUIPMENT TO TOW. WE LOVE THE FACT THAT THE REAR WINDOW IS REMOVEABLE AND THE VERSATILITY OF THE BED. HAVING THE HARD COVER COME STANDARD IS A DEFINANT PLUS FOR BIKES AND ATV'S. THE KIDS HAVE ALL THE ROOM THEY COULD EVER WANT IN THE BACK AND HAVE TONS OF ROOM TO GROW. THIS IS THE BEST TRUCK WE HAVE EVER HAD AND I WON'T GIVE IT UP, I DON'T EVEN LET MY HUSBAND DRIVE IT!!!!

Bought this vehicle because my wife loved it, I did not like the way it looked and the fact it did not have a real full size bed. I now love it; the Z71 package is a must I can haul all my fire wood, take my wife and kids camping while towing the boat do some off roading and take it surf fishing easily.. No problems to speak of, GM hit a home run with the Avalanche. My buddies Nissan Titan feels about half as strong as my Avalanche and he has been through 2 rears and 5 long term visits to the dealer for service , Considering a Titan? buy the Avalanche.

First thing I did was to dismantle all of the "removeables" and Armor-All all of the seals and weatherstripping. I have never seen so may seals in all my life but taken care of, they should last. Just a maintenance headache. Watch the rear window install closely, as if you are off just a little, it will not seal correctly.

All though the 2002 Avalanche is an innovative design it is poorly designed from stem to stern. Specifically, head lamps that hold water/condensation,engine air vents that collect all sorts of debris, plastic side panels that will probably cause corrosion problems in thefuture, combo leather and cloth seats that are absolutely uncmfortable after 30to 45min of driving, a fold down bed extension system that leaks and a covered bed design that the chevy dealer says is water resistant, ie it leaks, yup you guessed it by luggage and golf clubs have gotten wet more than once. To sum it up Dont buy the avalanche, built like a rock and worth about as much!

I have owned this vehicle since November of 2001. All i can say is this truck is fantastic. They have opened so many doors to the idea of having a truck. Its amazingly more pratical then an average truck, its powerful, and its so unique. Every pickup truck looks like every other pickup truck, apart from the grille. But the Avalanche has given a completely new look to a pickup truck. One that i find to be agressive (which in my opinion is AWESOME!) I have had no problems with it, and love it 100%. I would recommend this truck to anyone.

I love my new Avalanche. It serves several special purposes for me personally. First, I wanted an SUV type of vehicle, with 4 doors, that would comfortably tranport passengers. But I have a farm, dogs, horses, etc., and needed a truck that could have bed to haul things in, like hay and feed. We also camp, and wanted a comfortable vehicle to travel the highways and mountain roads, but be able to throw camp fire smelly tents and clothes and muddy items in the back. We found the perfect vehicle! The combination of SUV and Pickup is great.

When parking in public, leave time to answer onlookers questions and enthusiastic comments. It truely does turn heads. Not since I drove my '67 Shelby have I noticed this much attention. I'm in my 50's but the teens all want a turn at the wheel. And my mother also commented on the ride comfort in the back seat. (as good or better than the full sized Oldsmobile that I traded in). The appeal seems to span generations and genders. As a downer, my tailgate also fell open in the locked position.

The 3/4 ton with the big block is the only way to tow my heavy travel trailer across country. Much better towing with the 373 rear and Allision tranny than a small block 5.3 screaming with a 410 rear. Very flexible easily loading almost 30 sheets 1/2 drywall and closing the gate. Mileage is better with this 8.1 liter than my old 454. About 14-15 not towing and 11 with a 7000 pound trailer. I don't have to move over for the tractor trailers like you do with the small block. It is getting time to look at another Avalanche but I won't buy one with a small block. I love the truck but do not want a fancy toy truck with a 5.3 liter.

Overall this is a very good vehicle. I have 71K miles on this vehicle and have had no major problems. The tailgate still has a tendency to pop open, even after the dealer "fixed" it. The gas mileage is not that great, but what I would expect for a 4X4. I do like the midgate. In the winter I had the midgate down to utilize the full length bed, (I carry a lot of gear) and had no problems with the interior getting cold (I live in PA) and I do not have the heated seats.

I had to have the three truck bed top liners replaced because they leaked when I had the truck washed or when it rained. I read on the net that the early builts had a problem because they didn't seal everything as they should have when they built them...have no idea if that is true. I do know that GM took control after I called them because I couldn't get any satisfaction from the dealer I bought it from. The other dealer took action to try and resolve the leak problem. The original dealer just said that they never said the truck bed was "watertight", just water resistant....Dahhhhh I hope the problem is solved. The new panals are due in nexxt week.

I've pulled all kinds of loads, travel trailers, cargo trailers, and car haulers with combined loads up to 19700 lbs and it has handled them with ease. My wife likes to drive it as it drives like a sub. It is also great in being able to carry six passengers and folds down real quickly to haul 25 sheets of plywood all enclosed. The tonneau cover storage bag is a joke. I had a stainless ladder rack built and built storage into it for the covers. I get about 11 mpg pulling trailers and up to 16 on the freeway empty. Had two troubles, a pressure switch had to be changed and the r. rear axle flange had to be tightened back up three times. If it was destroyed, I would buy another today.

Not a bad truck. I had a K1500, and this is nicer than that truck, but still isn't as good as I could (should) be, especially considering the price. Workmanship/quality isn't nearly as good as it should be. I have upholstery coming unstitched, rattles and vibrations that can't be diagnosed, etc. Overall it isn't too bad though.

Too much windshield. Broke one allready. Gas mileage not great. Fun to drive. Lots of power. Make a diesel, soon???? Too much room for mud to hide in the wheel wells. Big grill to catch hoppers No slide decking on box is a pain some times

This is the nicest riding auto I have ever owned. I have had a yukon, silverado, t100, and a Landcruiser, and I have to say this is the best riding and to me anyway, best looking truck ever. I got mine with all the bells and whistles, and I have had great luck with it so far.

This vehicle although very fun to drive and extremely versatile, is one to keep in the garage until needed for work or play. Not the best communting vehicle because of the mileage. But all things being said this is a really fun truck to have if you have a family.

For those of you who are complaining about gas mileage please listen up. The first 36,000 were with all stock parts. Now that the original warranty is up I have added a flowmaster exhaust kit with dual cat tips and a K&N Fuel injection performance kit which increase my gas mileage, 3 to 4 mpg. Remember to keep your feul injection system clean ( every 15,000 or so for the avalanche ) Like with any vehicle keep up on your maintenance and your vehicle will work better for you. I'm happy I chose the 2002 Z71 Avalache over the suburban and the cadillac suv.

Safest truck you can drive! Gas mileage is the only drawback (I get about 13-14 MPG), but utility more than makes up for poor mileage. Tall vehicle. Strongly recommend step up bar. Conversion from SUV to truck is very easy. Ride is smooth whether on the road or rough terrain. 285HP engine has plenty of get up & go. Surprisingly good turning radius. Ingenious drainage system ensures water doesn't leak into the cockpit, even from the folding midgate. Took a while to get accustomed to the dimensions. A vehicle I liked when I bought it, & love more every time I get behind the wheel. Best purchase I've ever made & most fun I've ever had driving a vehicle.
