Volkswagen Offers $2,000 Customer Loyalty Incentive To Retain Buyers

HERNDON, Virginia Volkswagen of America is offering a $2,000 customer loyalty incentive this month to keep buyers in the fold in the wake of a diesel-emissions cheating scandal.

The offer ends on November 2 at Volkswagen dealerships.

"The offer can be combined with other offers, with the exception of dealer/employee programs," wrote Jeannine Ginivan, a VW spokeswoman, in response to a query from Edmunds on Monday.

Existing Volkswagen owners will receive $2,000 toward the purchase or lease of any new gasoline model in the lineup, including the 2016 Volkswagen Golf, Jetta and Passat.

The offer excludes all Volkswagen TDI clean-diesel models. Volkswagen halted the sale of all new vehicles with 2.0-liter diesel engines last month.

Volkswagen is struggling to retain customers after the September 18 disclosure that the automaker cheated on U.S. and California emissions tests by rigging software in 482,000 diesel-powered vehicles in the U.S.

The cheating scandal involves certain Volkswagen vehicles equipped with 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI engines.

The vehicles include the 2012-'15 Volkswagen Passat TDI, 2009-'15 Volkswagen Jetta TDI and 2009-'14 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI.

The 2010-'15 Volkswagen Golf TDI, 2015 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen TDI and 2012-'15 Volkswagen Beetle TDI and Volkswagen Beetle Convertible TDI are also included.

Volkswagen previously said it is "committed to finding a remedy as soon as possible."

Edmunds says: Current VW owners who are considering a new vehicle may be drawn into showrooms with this new offer.
