Volkswagen Is Bringing Atlas and Tiguan Hybrids to the U.S. Here's When They're Coming

They're coming, just not for a while …

What's new: Volkswagen is very, very late to the hybrid SUV game in the U.S., and it knows it needs to right that wrong.
Why it matters: EVs never took off how it expected, so now it's moving to a solution that more American buyers can get behind.
Edmunds says: Simply put: It's about time. And we still have some waiting to do.

We've known for some time that Volkswagen is working on hybrids for the U.S. market. At the reveal of the new Atlas Cross Sport this week, a Volkswagen spokesperson reiterated that news and confirmed the hybrid powertrain will be added during the Atlas' refresh in the next couple of years.

It's pretty safe to assume Volkswagen will do the same thing for the Tiguan. Given the new Tiguan hit the road at the tail end of 2025, we think this compact SUV will get a hybrid for its refresh for the 2027 or 2028 model year.

Is that soon enough? Will VW be too late? We won't know for sure until we get behind the wheel and test out these new hybrid systems — they could well be worth waiting for. What we can say for sure is Hyundai, Kia, Honda and Toyota have been taking VW's lunch money in this arena for far too long, and these really can't come soon enough.
