TORRANCE, California Toyota and the Environmental Media Association (EMA) are raffling off a hydrogen-powered Toyota Fuel Cell Vehicle, in one of the more unusual alt-fuel marketing campaigns in recent memory.

Prize applicants must be California residents. Tickets can be purchased at a cost of $100 per ticket or $500 for six.

The winner will be announced on October 18.

Toyota said it is the first major automaker to give away a fuel cell vehicle to an individual owner.

The Toyota Fuel Cell Vehicle is due to arrive in California showrooms in late 2015.  It has a 300-mile range. U.S. pricing has not been announced, but Toyota customers in Japan will pay around $68,000 for the car.

The Toyota FCV competes with the 2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell vehicle and the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell sedan.

Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the EMA, a nonprofit that promotes sustainable lifestyles.

Edmunds says: A clever way for California residents to get the Toyota Fuel Cell Vehicle in their garage.
