  • What's new: Tesla's second-generation Roadster — a car originally announced nine years ago — is finally being revealed on October 1, according to company CEO Elon Musk.
  • Why it matters: The electric sports car was initially promised to cost around $200,000 and go on sale in 2020.
  • Edmunds says: We'll believe it when we see it. Just saying.

The year 2017 feels like an absolute eternity ago thanks to, well, *gestures at global geopolitical mayhem*. But that's when Tesla announced the initial details of its second-generation electric Roadster. Now, Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that the Roadster — which was originally promised to go on sale in 2020 — is finally coming next month. The reveal date is set for October 1. No, really. For real this time.

Musk confirmed the reveal date on X — the social media site formally known as Twitter. The only language accompanying a teaser image is the phrase, "Go for launch."

Are we skeptical? You betcha. Remember, this is the car that was initially promised to go on sale in 2020, which then became 2024, then 2025, then April 1, 2026, and now October 1.

When it was announced in 2017, Tesla said the Roadster would be capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds and would have a driving range of 620 miles. Musk has a storied history of overpromising and underdelivering, so we'll be curious to see which of the Roadster's initial specs — if any — make it to the production car.
