Tesla Motors Debuts Batteries To Power Homes and Businesses

PALO ALTO, California Tesla Motors is expanding beyond building electric cars such as the Tesla Model S, unveiling batteries that can power homes and businesses.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday introduced "Tesla Energy," batteries that can store solar energy and serve as a backup system for consumers during blackouts.

"Tesla is not just an automotive company," the automaker said. "It's an energy innovation company. Tesla Energy is a critical step in this mission to enable zero emission power generation."

The Tesla Powerwall, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery unit for homes, will go on sale in late summer at a wholesale price of $3,500 for 10kWh models and $3,000 for 7kWh models. Prices do not include installation. The system uses the same batteries Tesla produces for its electric vehicles.

"The unit mounts seamlessly on a wall and is integrated with the local grid to harness excess power and give customers the flexibility to draw energy from their own reserve," Tesla said.

Edmunds says: Tesla says it wants to help wean the world off fossil fuels and it is expanding far beyond cars to do this.
