PALO ALTO, California Tesla Motors is sending software updates to Tesla Model S customers through an over-the-air update, a move that "will radically improve how the car adapts to the owner over time," said Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The upgrades include traffic-based navigation, commute advice and even the ability to name the car via the Tesla mobile app.

"You can now make your Model S nickname official," the company said in a statement.
"The car's name will appear in the Tesla mobile app and in the About Your Tesla section on the touchscreen."

Because the Software v6.0 update will be sent wirelessly, owners will not have to bring the Model S in for service.

"With each update, Model S becomes more attuned and responsive to its owner's needs without requiring excessive user input," Tesla said. "We will continuously fine-tune the software and work on new features in response to customer feedback."

With this latest update, the navigation system in the Model S will provide route suggestions based on real-time traffic and calculate estimated travel times. One cool element of this feature includes reports from other Model S cars also on the road at the time.

If a driver's commute route is experiencing gridlock, a message will pop up on the touchscreen when a faster route is available.

The new remote start feature allows the Model S to be started with the customer's smartphone.

A driver's smartphone will sync with the Model S to display a daily appointment schedule. The user taps on the event in the calendar to bring up route directions.

A new power management feature will put the Model S into energy-saving mode at night.

Edmunds says: Thoughtful upgrades that are designed to make a Model S owner's life easier — and build customer loyalty at the same time.
