DETROIT — Automakers are turning to the heavens and superheroes when it comes to clever names for exterior color choices in 2016.
A new "Kryptonite Green Metallic" replaces "Universe Blue" in the color palette offered on the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class SUV. Kryptonite is a radioactive material from Superman's home planet of Krypton.
New colors for the 2016 Cadillac ATS sedan include "Moonstone Metallic" and "Stellar Black Metallic."
A decade ago, automakers turned to food and TV cooking shows for names of new car colors. They included "Cappuccino" and "Crčme Brulee."
At the time, DuPont, one of the largest suppliers of automotive paints, named many of its new colors after foods. Red became "Gazpacho" and orange was dubbed "Mango."
Food-related names are still popular when it comes to the 2016 palette.
The four new exterior colors for the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle include "Habanero Orange," a reference to hot peppers.
The 2016 ATS can also be ordered in new "Cocoa Bronze Metallic," while car shoppers can select "Champagne Silver Metallic," a new shade for the 2016 Chevrolet Trax SUV.
The 2016 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible's exterior color choices are a bit more down-to-earth. VW adds "Stonewashed Blue" to the exterior color choices, a subtle hue that may make shoppers think of their favorite jeans.
Edmunds says: Despite the out-of-this-world naming strategy, car shoppers can't go wrong with white. Recent surveys say it remains the most popular color choice for new cars, no matter whether it's called "Oxford White" or "Arctic White."
