SANTA MONICA, California — Strong truck and SUV sales are expected to be a highlight of next week's February sales report, as car shoppers continue to gravitate toward vehicles such as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Murano, Ram 1500 and Ford F-150.
Edmunds.com is projecting a 12 percent sales increase from January 2015 and an 8 percent increase from February 2014.
"Gas prices inched back up this month, but it didn't appear to have much impact on shoppers' choices," said Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell. "We're still seeing a strong market for trucks and SUVs — especially compact crossover SUVs, which continue to ride an impressive wave of popularity."
She added: "It is likely that the hard-hitting winter weather motivated some buyers to upgrade from their two-wheel-drive vehicles."
The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Friday pegged the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline at $2.37 versus $2.03 a month ago.
Edmunds says: Winter storms and rising gas prices don't seem to be holding back any car shopper from snapping up their favorite truck or SUV.
