DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford Motor Co. will build a large solar canopy at its world headquarters in Michigan to provide charging for plug-in electric vehicles, including the 2015 Ford C-Max Hybrid Energi and Ford Fusion Energi, the automaker said on Thursday.

The general public can visit the site to learn more about solar power and how it is used as an alternative fuel for vehicles.

"Ford has a long history of innovation and a deep commitment to sustainability," said Bill Ford, the company's executive chairman, in a statement.

The solar canopy will provide enough electricity to power 158 average-sized homes. The automaker said it will be the second-largest solar carport in the Midwest, after a megawatt facility at the Cincinnati Zoo.

DTE Energy, a Michigan utility, will build, operate and maintain the solar carport. It will provide 360 covered parking spaces and 30 charging stations for plug-in electric vehicles.

The 2015 Ford C-Max Energi competes with the Chevrolet Volt, Honda Civic Hybrid and Toyota Prius V, as well as the outgoing Honda Insight.

Key competitors to the 2015 Ford Fusion Energi include the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and Buick LaCrosse with eAssist.

Edmunds says: This ambitious project underscores Ford's commitment to alt-fuel vehicles and a determination to educate the public about their benefits.
