LOS ANGELES — The SAIC Roewe Mobiliant, a single-seat vehicle patterned after an ant, won the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge.

It was a major victory for the Chinese automaker, which beat out entries from BMW, Mazda and others.

Judges said the Mobiliant concept was "optimistic, beautiful and best answered the competition criteria by mimicking a truly sustainable solution that resembled an ancient system that has worked for millions of years."

Contestants were charged with coming up with an innovative public transit solution based on biology.

The theme of this year's Design Challenge was Biomimicry & Mobility 2025.

Edmunds says: An ending right out of Aesop's Fables.
