HERNDON, Virginia The redesigned VW.com, the consumer Web site of the German automaker, draws its inspiration from online dating and e-commerce sites and is designed to match buyers with available inventory at Volkswagen dealerships.

The site, dubbed VW.com 3.0, features more than 80,000 "profile" pages that feature in-stock vehicles nationwide.

"With the new VW.com experience, consumers don't need to know our product lineup to find a car that's right for them," said Vinay Shahani, Volkswagen of America vice president of brand marketing, in a statement on Thursday. "Consumers simply select the features they want and VW.com instantly connects them to a range of options based on both their needs and available inventory in the area."

Shoppers can find cars through a variety of search capabilities, from style and color to specific features. Each car has its own profile page. The redesigned site was designed for the tablet first, Volkswagen of America said.

To ease the buying process for consumers, Volkswagen recently partnered with DealerMatch to create an online marketplace where Volkswagen dealers can buy and sell used vehicles among themselves.

Edmunds says: This is a great way for Volkswagen shoppers to view a variety of cars available at dealerships in their area. Expect others to copy this intuitive approach.
