BEIJING — The new Range Rover Hybrid Long Wheelbase that debuted at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show won't be sold in the U.S., but the company told Edmunds the SUV previews future technology that will be available to American consumers.

The Range Rover Hybrid LWB is a diesel-electric hybrid.

"All of this advanced technology will be coming to the U.S.," said Stuart Schorr, a Jaguar Land Rover spokesman, in a phone conversation on Wednesday. "Diesel and diesel-electric hybrid technology will make it to the U.S. in the long term. It will be good for consumers because it will give them more options."

He added: "We're not giving out any details or a timetable right now."

Jaguar Land Rover has never offered a diesel-engine option on its vehicles in the U.S., Schorr noted.

The upcoming Jaguar XE sports sedan will feature a new family of gasoline and diesel engines named Ingenium. The XE will go on sale in the U.S. in calendar year 2016, most likely as a 2017 model. It will be equipped with an optional diesel engine and compete against the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The Range Rover Hybrid Long Wheelbase will be the first diesel hybrid on sale in China, according to the company.

It is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine, lithium-ion battery pack, electric motor and eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. In electric mode, the Range Rover Hybrid can travel at speeds of up to 30 mph for a range of up to one mile before the diesel engine kicks in.

Edmunds says: Don't put off your SUV shopping plans in the meantime, but make a mental note that you're going to have some fuel-efficient powertrain choices when it comes to Jaguar and Land Rover in the not-too-distant future.
