Patriot Subaru Goes Green by Planting Trees for Earth Day

SACO, Maine Patriot Subaru takes "going green" literally for Earth Day by making a $25 donation toward the planting of a tree for each vehicle sold on Friday and Saturday, April 22-23, at the Patriot location in Saco, Maine, and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 22-24, at the store in North Attleboro, Massachusetts.

The promotion coincides with the Subaru Love Spring Event at Patriot, so shoppers can take advantage of special savings on the latest Subaru models, like the 2016 Impreza and Legacy sedans, Outback wagon, or the Forester and Crosstrek SUVs.

And as a bonus, Tom Talbott, Patriot's marketing director, told Edmunds: "We've added a new element this year. Starting with the Earth Day promotion, we're giving out packets of flower seeds to customers. It's not an item that has great monetary value, per se, but the message is in line with green thinking. If someone puts them in a pot on their desk or gives them to a child to plant in a little garden, it's all good."

Since its start in 1970, Earth Day has spread to 192 countries where now more than a billion people take part in a variety of activities to promote environmental consciousness.

And planting trees is right in line with the 2016 Earth Day theme, "Trees for the Earth," with the goal of planting 7.8 billion trees worldwide by 2020.

But Patriot Subaru doesn't limit its environmental activities to one day per year.

In addition to the Earth Day promotion, the dealership's green initiatives include extensive use of LED lighting, landscaping with native plants that don't require irrigation, skylights and ceiling fans to reduce energy consumption, Energy Star-rated appliances, and an aggressive recycling program.

Perhaps most unique, as Talbott pointed out, is "a large organic garden we have in Saco, where we grow all kinds of vegetables in the summer. It is tended to by the associates, who take home plenty of fresh-grown items. We also have customers who like to tend to the garden while their car is being serviced, and enjoy taking home fresh vegetables."

As a result of these and other green initiatives, both Patriot locations have been certified by Subaru of America as Eco-Friendly Dealerships.

Edmunds says: Environmentally conscious car shoppers should check with Patriot Subaru or their local Subaru dealership to learn more about their eco-friendly programs.
