"We appreciated the conversation with Volkswagen," the EPA said in response to a query from Edmunds. "We will continue to work toward a solution."
This means owners of nearly 600,000 Volkswagen diesel vehicles fitted with illegal software that allows them to emit up to 40 times the legally allowable pollution limits still have no word about a recall or vehicle buyback program.
Gina McCarthy, administrator of the EPA met with Volkswagen CEO Matthias Mueller and Dr. Herbert Diess, CEO of Volkswagen passenger cars of Volkswagen AG.
"We appreciate the time that Administrator McCarthy took to meet with us," Volkswagen Group of America said in a statement. "Volkswagen will continue to fully cooperate with EPA and CARB."
No further details about the meeting were released.
CARB, the California Air Resources Board, on Tuesday rejected VW?s plan to repair 2.0-liter diesel cars fitted with so-called "defeat devices" that allow them to skirt U.S. and state pollution regulations.
California regulators said they turned down the proposed recall plan for several reasons, including the plan?s failure to "adequately address overall impacts on vehicle performance, emissions and safety."
Edmunds says: Volkswagen is under pressure to come up with a better plan, as the impasse between the company and safety regulators drags on.
