YOKOHAMA, Japan — The new Nissan Smart rearview mirror, which debuts at the 2014 Geneva Auto Show, was developed in response to customer feedback and is designed to improve visibility, the automaker said on Friday.

Drivers can switch between the high-tech mirror, which features a built-in LCD monitor, and the traditional mirror.

The Smart rearview mirror provides a wider and clearer view versus the standard mirror.
A high-resolution camera mounted on the rear of the vehicle projects an image onto the LCD monitor, which is embedded into the traditional mirror. The driver gets an unobstructed view of the rear, even if visibility is limited due to the vehicle's design, cargo or tall passengers.

Nissan said it plans to introduce the Smart rearview mirror to global markets in 2015, but it did not spell out specific plans for a U.S. launch. Pricing was not announced.

In addition to boosting vehicle safety and visibility, the Smart rearview mirror is expected to influence vehicle design.

"It offers the possibility of new and exciting designs for our upcoming models because Smart rearview mirror is an alternative to a very wide rear window for good visibility," said Andy Palmer, Nissan chief planning officer and executive vice president, in a statement. "We'll have the flexibility to create new shapes and to further improve aerodynamics for better fuel efficiency."

Edmunds says: Does this mean the rear window is going the way of the rumble seat and tailfins?
