YOKOHAMA, Japan — Japanese automaker Nissan has released teaser sketches of its new Datsun compact ahead of the car's official unveiling July 15 in New Delhi.

Nissan is resurrecting the Datsun brand, which was scrapped more than a decade ago, but only in emerging markets such as India, Russia and Indonesia, beginning in 2014.

Nissan said the Datsun brand will offer entry-level buyers in those markets "an engaging driving experience, peace of mind ownership and accessibility at the right and transparent price with a competitive Total Cost of Ownership."

Nissan previously used the Datsun name from the early 1930s to the mid-1980s, when it was phased out in favor of the corporate brand name.

Edmunds says: Don't expect to see a revival of the Datsun name any time soon in North America.
