New Toyota Prius Model Bound for 2016 New York Auto Show

TORRANCE, California — A new model in the Toyota Prius lineup will take center stage at the 2016 New York Auto Show, according to a teaser photo released on Tuesday.

Toyota said the new Prius variant will feature "stand-out style" and "intelligent eco-tech." The Japanese automaker calls the car "the next mechanical marvel in the Prius lineup."

It will be unveiled on March 23 and takes aim at the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf.

A teaser image shows the Prius model's rear end, featuring dramatic horizontal taillights.

Toyota did not disclose key details, such as pricing, launch timing or technical specifications.

The Prius hybrid is a true success story in the American market, with styling that sets it apart from its gasoline-powered competitors.

The new variant debuts at a time of low gas prices and may redirect the attention of car shoppers from trucks and SUVs, which are outselling more fuel-efficient vehicles.

The 2016 Toyota Prius is on sale now at Toyota dealerships.

Edmunds says: The guessing game has started. This may be the new Prius Plug-in Hybrid, a replacement for the Prius v wagon, the Prius C hatchback — or none of the above.
