New Mazda CX-9 Set for 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show Debut

LOS ANGELES — The next-generation Mazda CX-9 three-row SUV, bearing a sleek new look that borrows from the design of the 2016 Mazda 6, will debut this month at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Mazda's flagship SUV will feature a significant overhaul and "a more premium design execution that befits a three-row midsize crossover SUV," the Japanese automaker said in a statement on Wednesday.

A Mazda spokesman did not respond immediately to a query from Edmunds asking when the new CX-9 will arrive at Mazda dealerships in the U.S. or what the model-year designation will be.

Mazda said the redesigned CX-9 will move to the Skyactiv powertrain but did not provide any technical specifications.

The CX-9 will use Mazda's curvy Kodo or "soul of motion" design language. A single teaser image of the CX-9 shows a dramatic redesign with a long front hood and a fastback roof line.

Key CX-9 competitors include the Acura MDX, BMW X5, Hyundai Santa Fe and Volvo XC90.

Edmunds says: This is one of the most important debuts at the L.A. show for car shoppers, since Mazda hasn't done a major redesign of the CX-9 since its introduction in 2007.
