DETROIT — A new "top-end, high-technology" Cadillac will be built at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant starting in the fourth quarter of 2015, GM confirmed on Friday.

GM said the unnamed Cadillac will be "positioned above today's CTS and XTS product lines."

The new Cadillac will make its public debut in the first half of next year.

Sources told Edmunds earlier this year that the car will be a sedan.

"The objective for this upcoming model is to lift the Cadillac range by entering the elite class of top-level luxury cars," said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen, in a statement.

"Currently in development, this new rear-wheel drive-oriented sedan uses completely new, custom-designed materials on a unique vehicle architecture."

The new platform is code-named Omega. The new Cadillac is expected to compete with the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Pricing for the upcoming Cadillac flagship has not been announced.

GM said it has invested more than $1 billion in the plant over the last five years. The Detroit-Hamtramck plant also builds the Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac ELR.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers will have to wait about another year before they can get their hands on this new top-end Cadillac.
