New 2016 Lexus GS 200t Set for November Unveiling at Lexus Dealerships

MONTEREY, California — The new 2016 Lexus GS 200t midsize luxury sedan will round out the GS lineup at Lexus dealerships this November. It debuts at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The rear-wheel-drive GS 200t follows the industry trend toward more fuel-efficient, downsized engines. It is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The newcomer to the GS lineup is designed to make the luxury car more competitive against the BMW 5 Series and Cadillac CTS. Both of those can be equipped with 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines.

Lexus said the new GS 200t carries a fuel economy estimate of 33 mpg on the highway. In comparison, the 2015 Lexus GS 350 with a 3.5-liter V6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission returns 19 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

The EPA has not announced official fuel economy numbers on the 2016 GS.

Lexus spokeswoman Allison Takahashi told Edmunds that pricing will be announced closer to launch date.

The Lexus GS 350 and GS 450h hybrid remain part of the 2016 GS lineup.

The improved 2016 GS 350 is equipped with the carryover 3.5-liter V6 engine, but gets a boost of 5 hp for a total output of 311 hp. Torque improves from 277 lb-ft to 280 lb-ft. The engine is linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

A restyled front end with standard bi-LED headlights is among the highlights for the 2016 GS.

New color choices include Matador Red Mica, Nightfall Mica and Ultrasonic Blue Mica.

There are new interior colors and wood trim choices, including Matte Walnut and Linear 3D.

An F Sport package that highlights performance is available for all three GS models and features track-tuned chassis enhancements. Staggered-tire sizes are available on rear-wheel-drive versions of the GS.

New for 2016 is the optional Lexus Safety System + which combines a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, intelligent high-beam headlights and all-speed dynamic radar cruise control. All GS models include 10 standard airbags.

Edmunds says: Luxury shoppers who have fuel economy top of mind will be pleased with the newest addition to the Lexus GS lineup.
