Mercedes-AMG Sport Line To Bow at 2015 Detroit Auto Show

AFFALTERBACH, Germany — The first two models from the new Mercedes-AMG Sport line, the Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG and the Mercedes-Benz GLE450, will be unveiled at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, according to Daimler.

The GLE is the renamed Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV.

More AMG Sport family models are in the pipeline, the company said.

The AMG Sport models are aimed at car shoppers seeking more affordable AMG models, the automaker said. This strategy is aimed directly at Audi's popular S line vehicles, which are slotted between the German automaker's base cars and the pricier RS models.

"The AMG Sport models will fill the gap between the AMG Sports package for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and the classic AMG models, thereby underpinning the brand's growth strategy on a sustained basis," Daimler said in a statement.

Mercedes-AMG plans to double sales in the next three years.

No word yet on Mercedes-AMG Sport line pricing. The new models are expected to arrive at Mercedes-Benz dealerships sometime next year.

The more accessible product line will feature "uprated engine output, all-wheel drive as standard and special chassis components and brake systems from the classic AMG models," Daimler said.

"The introduction of the Sport models in 2015 will make an additional significant contribution towards lowering the fuel consumption of the AMG fleet," the company said.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers who can't afford the steep price tags on the classic AMG models get an alternative with this new family of performance-oriented Mercedes-AMG vehicles.
