WHITLEY, England — The 550-horsepower Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR, a high-performance version of the SUV, will go on sale in 2015, the automaker said on Tuesday.

The new model takes the popular SUV into new territory, since the automaker promises "it will behave like a performance car."

Pricing and U.S. launch timing were not announced.

A camouflaged prototype of the Ranger Rover Sport SVR will debut at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The SVR designation will be used on future high-performance Jaguar and Land Rover models.

The newest version of the Range Rover "will be the fastest, most agile and most responsive Land Rover vehicle ever built," the company said.

It is the creation of the new Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations.

The Range Rover Sport SVR gets a jump of 40 hp on the optional 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine currently available on the 2014 Range Rover Sport.

The high-performance Range Rover Sport will target high-end versions of the BMW X5, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Porsche Cayenne.

Edmunds says: The U.S. is the largest Range Rover Sport market in the world, so this upcoming model will be eagerly embraced by consumers.
