Hyundai Confirms Santa Fe Extended-Range EV and Genesis GV80 Hybrid Are Coming Soon

Hyundai will introduce a Santa Fe extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) next year. Company president and CEO José Muñoz confirmed plans for a Santa Fe EREV during Hyundai's Investor Day presentation on Wednesday, saying the more efficient SUV will arrive in early 2027.

What's an EREV? Think of it as an EV with a gas engine on board for backup. A large battery and pair of electric motors will drive the Santa Fe, while the internal combustion engine will solely be used to charge the battery. This propulsion type is becoming increasingly common; the 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid uses a similar, albeit smaller, setup.

In a statement, Hyundai said the Santa Fe EREV "is expected to deliver more than 600 miles of total range" when the battery is fully charged and the gas tank is full. Hyundai also says the Santa Fe EREV will be manufactured locally; the SUV will be built at the company's facility in Alabama.

Hyundai's luxury division, Genesis, is also slated to gain hybrid models. A midsize GV80 hybrid SUV will arrive later this year, with an extended-range electric SUV — likely the smaller GV70 — joining the lineup in early 2027. Hyundai says the Genesis EREV SUV should have 640 miles of range or more.

Beyond these models, Hyundai is planning a major product offensive that sees 58 new or refreshed models in North America by 2030. The company's overall goal is an ambitious one: 5.55 million annual sales globally by 2030.
