ALZENAU, Germany — Hyundai will launch a series of high-performance cars under a new sub-brand dubbed "N," but U.S. plans for the lineup have not been disclosed.

"Stay tuned," said Jim Trainor, a Hyundai Motor America spokesman, in response to a query from Edmunds on Tuesday.

The "N" name is a reference to Hyundai's Namyang R&D Center in South Korea.

The announcement about the sub-brand was made at the launch of Hyundai's 2014 World Rally Car, which is based on the Hyundai i20.

"The Hyundai 'N' will be used to symbolize Hyundai's high-performance technology on both the i20 WRC car and future mass-produced high-performance cars," the automaker said in a statement. "Linked directly to the company's renewed involvement in WRC, 'N' brings together Hyundai Motor's technology and innovation with the learning from motorsport to provide a new experience for customers."

The "N" brand will be based here at Hyundai's motorsport division.

Edmunds says: The Hyundai Veloster Turbo would be a natural for the "N" brand.
