TORRANCE, California A grassroots campaign is seeking to bring the Honda Civic Type R to the U.S., after a concept version of the car debuted at the 2014 Geneva Auto Show.

"Honda enthusiasts demand that the discrimination against our market stops right here," according to an online petition. "There is no excuse anymore. If other countries can enjoy the best Honda has to offer, we should be able to enjoy the same rights."

The petition had 10,000 signatures as of Thursday morning.

"The interest around Civic Type R has been tremendous and it's great to see such enthusiasm from our Honda fans," wrote Steve Kinkade, an American Honda spokesman, in response to an Edmunds query. "We encourage and appreciate the continued feedback and are always listening. As with any product, we conduct a thorough analysis to determine if the business case makes sense. We appreciate the passion from our Honda fans and will continue crunching the numbers to see if Type R makes sense for the U.S. market."

In a statement earlier this month, Honda said that the Honda Civic Type R concept that debuted at the 2014 Geneva Show signals "a new era for the marque — with the most extreme Civic Type R yet." The upcoming new Type R will be sold in Europe.

Edmunds says: Honda isn't promising anything yet.
