TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan Volkswagen of America offered car shoppers a glimpse into the future on Wednesday, saying that it is developing cars that are "capable of learning, predicting and adapting to drivers' needs and wishes."

The German automaker said it intends to redefine the driving experience through cloud and connected intelligence services. Simply put, the cloud is a network of servers that offer different high-tech functions.

"Vehicles would connect to the cloud and understand the driver's location, how it affects the driver's mobility and will provide assistance to the driver's specific needs, such as routing the driver to an available parking spot," Volkswagen said.

Future VW vehicles will offer technologies that seamlessly integrate smartphone applications and enable connected navigation with real-time map images and updates.

"The navigation systems would also mimic the expertise of a driving companion, familiar with both the driver and destination," the automaker said.

The work is being done by Volkswagen Group's Electronics Research Laboratory in Belmont, California.

The automaker did not provide a timetable for the release of the futuristic features. It did not say which Volkswagen vehicles would be the first to showcase them, either.

The update was provided by the company at the 2014 CAR Management Briefing Seminars here.

Edmunds says: Your future Volkswagen Jetta and Beetle will be smart vehicles.
