NEW YORK — The 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang is the impetus for a new fashion collection and a line of nail polish.

Ford announced on Thursday that five top fashion designers from around the world will collaborate with Ford on the Mustang Unleashed collection — a limited-edition line of apparel inspired by the iconic pony car.

Mustang Unleashed will feature designers including Anna Sui, Rogan Gregory and Scott Mackinlay-Hahn of Rogan, Paula Cademartori, Tomaso Anfossi, Francesco Ferrari and Pamela Love.

"Each designer will unleash his or her creativity by interpreting the spirit and personality of Mustang with one-of-a-kind designs on three shirts," Ford said in a statement.

The collection goes on sale globally in the fall.

At the same time, OPI released full information on its new Mustang nail polish line, which will be sold through salons beginning in July.

The juxtaposition of car culture and nail fashion might seem like a bit of a stretch, but OPI co-founder Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, who developed the product line, doesn't see it that way.

"Nail color, just like the car she drives, is the ultimate expression of a woman's personality," Weiss-Fischmann said in a statement. "Automobiles are synonymous with style, and there is a special kind of love affair between a woman and her car."

Ford's Susan Lampinen, Group Chief Designer, Color and Material, agrees.

"Color is very personal to people and to how they express themselves," she said in a statement. "Similarly, color plays a key role in defining the character of a vehicle: Mustang paint colors need to denote performance, sportiness, and power. They are expressive, bold and eye-catching colors, like the ones chosen for this limited-edition collection."

Available nail colors include Race Red, which OPI calls "the hero of the collection." Although the Ford color designation dates from 2011, the hue is reminiscent of a number of bright reds associated with the Mustang from the very beginning.

A lacquer called 50 Years of Style is evocative of some earthy shades applied to Mustangs through the years. OPI says you can "celebrate all your milestones with this made-to-party golden pearl."

Queen of the Road black, inspired by the Mustang's interior, "evokes sophistication and will always be a classic — just like the little black dress."

If that's too subtle, try the hot pink Girls Love Ponies. Although it may seem to be straying from the traditional color palette, Ford actually did offer bright pink on Mustangs in the late 1960s and early ‘70s.

Angel with a Leadfoot is more subtle in white. But, says OPI, "whether worn alone or as an accent, white is essential to a woman's wardrobe and to making a statement."

Finally, we have The Sky's My Limit, an aqua blue that "awakens a woman's sense of adventure and is a trend shade for summer going into the fall."

Edmunds says: These fashion efforts should add some polish to the Ford Mustang's 50th anniversary.
