SANTA MONICA, California Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota are winners with car shoppers, snagging lots of top spots in the 2015 Most Popular on Edmunds.com award winners.

Unlike several top automotive awards, which are selected by auto journalists, these awards come directly from shoppers. About 18 million of them visit Edmunds.com each month to find the perfect car.

The vehicles that are the most researched by shoppers include the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Chevrolet Colorado.

The awards are divided according to vehicle segment.

In the compact car segment, the most popular vehicles are the Honda Civic, Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla.

The most popular compact crossover SUVs are the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Forester.

The Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma grabbed the top spots in the compact truck segment.

Car shoppers closely studied the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class in the entry luxury car segment.

The Acura RDX, Audi Q5 and Lexus RX 350 are the winners in the entry luxury SUV segment.

The Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang and Mini Cooper dominated the entry sports car segment on the list.

In the large-car segment, the winners are the Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Charger and Toyota Avalon.

The Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Mazda CX-9 were most often shopped in the large crossover SUV segment.

In the large traditional SUV segment, the popular picks are the Chevrolet Tahoe, Dodge Durango and Ford Expedition.

Shoppers turned to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 in the large truck segment.

The winners in the midrange luxury car segment are the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

In the midrange luxury SUV category, the winners are the Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Porsche Macan.

The Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry dominated the midsize car segment.

Shoppers researched the Hyundai Santa Fe, Jeep Cherokee and Toyota Highlander most frequently in the midsize crossover SUV segment.

Among the midsize traditional SUVs, the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan Pathfinder took home top honors.

Minivan shoppers liked the Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.

Premium luxury car shoppers turned to the Maserati Ghibli, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Tesla Model S.

In the premium luxury SUV category, shoppers heavily researched the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80 and Land Rover Range Rover.

The BMW i8 was a winner in the premium sports car category.
