Hyundai's Funky 3-Door Hatchback Is All-New

After nearly a decade on the market, the funky three-door Hyundai Veloster gets a whole new look. The redesigned Veloster, revealed at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, also brings upgrades to available powertrains and several new interior features to the mix.

To infuse a bit of pep to the standard Veloster, a new base engine has been added as well as a new high-performance Veloster N. Instead of the 1.6-liter non-turbocharged engine, the base Veloster now has a 2.0-liter engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque — an increase of 15 hp. The base 2.0-liter engine is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic.

The 2019 Veloster Turbo gets a carry-over engine, a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The Turbo model also retains its previously available transmissions, a six-speed manual and a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic, and is equipped with an upgraded suspension and sportier summer tires. The Veloster N gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 275 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, along with all sorts of performance goodies such as bigger brakes, a lowered suspension, high-performance tires, a limited-slip differential, rev matching and five adjustable drive modes. The Veloster N is expected to be in showrooms in late 2018.

Aside from all the new sheet metal, the hatchback features a new grille, a lower roofline and new LED headlights. LED running lights and taillights are also available. As a result, the Veloster looks a bit sleeker and less bulky at the corners. On the inside, there might be some familiar surfaces and buttons, but the Veloster's dashboard is redesigned and reconfigured with the touchscreen now higher up and no longer flush with the surface of the dash. The new Veloster also gets several desirable safety and convenience features such as lane keeping assist, driver fatigue warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, along with wireless smartphone charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatability, and a head-up display.

The 2019 Hyundai Veloster is definitiely unconventional thanks to its three-door design, but it's affably practical. The Veloster N is an exciting addition to Hyundai's lineup, especially as a more serious competitor to hot-hatch rivals including the Ford Focus ST and the Honda Civic Type R. Whether it's the standard Veloster or the new Veloster N, we're looking forward to getting behind the wheel and seeing just how this new Hyundai measures up
