Feds Investigate 2008 Honda Accord for Inadvertent Side Airbag Deployment

Just the Facts:
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into an estimated 363,000 2008 Honda Accord vehicles following consumer complaints of inadvertent side airbag deployment.
  • NHTSA said two of the complaints reported injuries allegedly caused by the deploying airbags.
  • American Honda Motor Co. told Edmunds it is cooperating with the probe and conducting its "own internal review" of the matter.

WASHINGTON The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into an estimated 363,000 2008 Honda Accord vehicles following consumer complaints of inadvertent side airbag deployment.

NHTSA said it "has identified 28 complaints alleging inadvertent deployment of the side airbags on model year 2008 Honda Accord vehicles."

The complaints say the driver-side or passenger-side curtain airbag and the side torso/seat-mounted airbag deployed when the driver or passenger door was shut.

Two of the complaints reported injuries allegedly caused by the deploying airbags.

Federal safety regulators have opened what is called a "preliminary evaluation" into the matter. Such a move sometimes precedes a vehicle recall. But the 2008 Accord has not been recalled at this point.

NHTSA said it has opened the preliminary evaluation to "evaluate the scope, frequency and consequence of the alleged defect."

American Honda Motor Co. told Edmunds it is cooperating with the probe.

"Honda is aware that the NHTSA has initiated a preliminary evaluation based on a small number of complaints regarding the side airbags and side curtain airbags on certain 2008 Accord models," wrote Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman, in response to an e-mailed query. "Honda will cooperate with the NHTSA through the investigation process, and will continue our own internal review of the available information."

Edmunds says: There's not much for consumers to do at this point except to wait for federal safety regulators to finish their work. But if you own a 2008 Honda Accord and have any problems with it, get it into the dealership immediately.
