- Dahl Ford in Davenport, Iowa helped TV meteorologist Terry Swails chase tornados by outfitting his team with a customized 2014 Ford Expedition EL.
- The storm-chasing team equipped the SUV with radar equipment and connectivity features that allowed Swails to broadcast his experience to enthusiasts.
- Many onlookers approached the Expedition to get photos with Swails or later thanked the dealership on social-media outlets for its sponsorship.
Equipped with radar equipment and connectivity features that allowed TV meteorologist Terry Swails to track down storms and broadcast his experience to enthusiasts, the black Expedition accommodated a team of six.
KV Dahl, general manager at Dahl Ford, was to be on the excursion but a scheduling conflict prevented him from making the trip.
"KV has a longtime interest in storms," Nichole Simms, digital marketing manager for Dahl Ford Davenport, Inc., told Edmunds. "Any time one rolls in, he gets up and goes to his deck or porch and watches it."
Dahl Ford adorned the ride with decals to make the Storm Chaser Expedition instantly recognizable, adding the words "Powered by Dahl Ford" to it.
"It's a real head-turner," said Simms. "Where ever Terry stopped, people came out to have their picture taken with him and the Expedition."
The chase took place May 28 — June 1 and the team got to rub elbows in Nebraska with The Weather Channel's storm trackers.
While Simms said she is unsure if the sponsorship led to any sales, she's certain it raised the dealership's profile as a community member.
"I received many Facebook thank yous from people about the sponsorship," she said. "And we all know social media is a conversation starter."
Dahl Ford plans on removing the decals and selling the Expedition as a demo model.
Edmunds says: Chasing storms might lead to chasing customers right into a dealership.
