WASHINGTON BMW of North America is recalling 840,000 vehicles in the U.S. for potentially defective Takata airbag inflators, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

BMW told federal safety regulators it is not aware of a ruptured inflator in any of its vehicles associated with the recall.

BMW dealers will replace the driver's front airbag. At this time, a repair solution is being developed and parts are not available, BMW said.

Owners will be mailed an interim notification beginning on March 31. A second notice will be mailed when parts are available.

Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

This is part of a larger expansion of the ongoing Takata recall. Takata said in January that inflators in more than 5 million vehicles were defective.

Edmunds says: When you receive a letter asking you to have this service performed by an authorized BMW dealer, please do so as soon as possible.
