Just the Facts:
  • Just in time for the holidays, BMW has introduced the i Collection of eco-friendly tech accessories.
  • The i Collection was inspired by the BMW i3 all-electric hatchback and BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sport coupe.
  • In addition to the i Collection, BMW announced a number of other specialty collections.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey — Inspired by the BMW i3 all-electric hatchback and i8 plug-in hybrid sport coupe, BMW has introduced the i Collection of eco-friendly tech accessories, just in time for the holidays.

BMW calls this its "first lifestyle accessories collection featuring products that incorporate the sustainable BMW i concept."

The collection includes the $49 i Solar Charger, which can power a mobile device in two or three hours by USB cable or 12-15 hours in sunlight or artificial light. Adapters allow it to connect to various devices from Apple, Blackberry, Nokia and Samsung.

While a mouse might not be the most high-tech accessory that comes to mind, BMW's i8 computer mouse does its part to carry out the sustainability mission. At $44 it delivers energy savings of 30 percent via its LED light and automatic sleep mode. And, according to BMW, the mouse's styling is based on the design of the i8 Concept Car.

For $49, BMW's "sustainable and chic" i laptop pouch is made from blue, gray and brown "recycled plastic felt-like material and leather tanned with olive leaves." The pouch, whose design is intended to mimic that of the i3 and i8 cars, will fit up to a 15-inch laptop.

Other items on the i Collection Web site include a $20 key lanyard made of recycled PET plastic, a notebook also made of recycled PET for $33, and a pen inscribed "BMW i. Born Electric" that sells for $20.

The BMW Kids' Collection features everything from pedal cars to clothing to the unique BMW Kidsbike. Priced at $355 and available in blue, red and orange, this clever concept starts out as a push bike for kids as young as two-and-a-half and then, with the addition of a chain and pedals, can be turned into a pedal-style bike for children up to about six years of age.

These and other gifts, collectibles and lifestyle collections are available from select BMW dealers and at ShopBMWUSA.com.

Edmunds says: It seems that enthusiasts will find no shortage of BMW goodies under the tree this year.
