WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey — The new BMW Connected app, designed to serve as a "personal mobility companion," is now available at the Apple App Store to BMW ConnectedDrive customers in the U.S. for iOS devices.
For BMW plug-in hybrid models, including the 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e, users can view the battery state of charge, electric range and hybrid range.
BMW Connected services "will be available anytime, anywhere — in or outside of the vehicle," BMW said in a statement.
The new app reads your calendar and puts the address for any future appointments at the top of a destinations list. It provides estimated travel times inside and outside of the vehicle for routine or planned destinations, including "last mile" walking guidance from the parking spot to the final destination.
It checks for traffic conditions and notifies you of the best time to leave, by sending a message to your iPhone or Apple Watch.
BMW Connected is "smart." The longer you use it, the more it learns and remembers your habits.
Locations of BMW dealerships, gas stations and charging stations are available with one click.
The new app is powered by Microsoft's Azure cloud and was introduced at Microsoft's annual developers conference.
Edmunds says: The app is designed to sync with BMW vehicles back to 2011. It will be an invaluable tool for consumers who seek the latest in connected cars.
