Blue Will Dominate Car Colors, According to BASF

Shades of blue will dominate the automotive color pallette for the next four to five years, according to the BASF Automotive Color Trends 2017/18 report.

The annual study from BASF's Coatings Division, which helps manufacturers prepare for future auto paint colors, is put together by a team of designers from around the world who research trends in such areas as technology, society and popular culture. The result is a collection of 65 hues prepared for automakers worldwide, with specific recommendations for each region.

In North America, for example, expect to see a variety of blue-tinted paint jobs, led by Undercurrent Blue, which BASF calls, "a dark navy with a silky texture that exudes mystery and celebration of self."

Other shades of blue will include Cabochon, a color that "travels from a deep blue to an elegant silver green," and the more intense Preternatural Blue, made bolder by a blue-tinted clearcoat. We'll also get a hue called Mis en Abyme, a shining golden color that BASF says "forms a counterpoint to the digital airbrushing and minute perfections of a virtual world."

BASF notes that a desire for more simplicity and transparency in the modern world led to the overarching theme for this year's global color pallette, called Translucid. The search for nature amid technology inspired a variety of beige and other neutral shades, some with blue undertones, that will be common in various parts of the world. As BASF explains: "Warm, beige colors deal with aspects of the skin, while dark and light blues express digitalization of the human body." Rusty reds and washed-out pastels will also make an appearance in some areas.

But more traditional car shoppers should have nothing to fear. BASF provides assurances that colors such as silver, gray, black and white will still be available and should remain popular for some time to come.
