DETROIT All 2015 Buick models will come standard with a rearview camera, GM announced on Tuesday.

They include the 2015 Buick Verano, LaCrosse, Enclave, Encore and Regal.

"Safety and technology top the lists of important considerations for Buick customers," GM said in a statement. "That's why every 2015 Buick model will come standard with a rearview camera."

GM did not respond immediately to a query from Edmunds asking how much the rearview camera will add to the cost of a 2015 Buick.

Buick joins a growing list of automakers — including Honda — that are rushing to install the safety feature as standard equipment in their vehicles. Such systems enable drivers to see whether people or objects are in the blind spot behind vehicles and prevent so-called "backover" accidents.

Honda said earlier this year that by the 2015 model year, all Honda and Acura models will have rearview cameras as standard equipment. Subaru is also making the cameras standard in all vehicles and they will be standard on the 2015 Ford Focus, which is due out later this year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will require automakers to install back-up cameras in all vehicles by May 2018.

"Of the technologies tested for their potential to reduce backover incidents, the camera-based systems may have the greatest potential to provide drivers with reliable assistance in identifying people in the path of the vehicle when backing," said NHTSA in a recent report.

According to data compiled by Edmunds, 53 percent of 2013 model year vehicles offer rearview cameras as standard equipment on at least one trim level; 79 percent of 2013 vehicles offer the systems as standard or optional equipment on at least one trim level.

Edmunds says: Safety-minded car shoppers who are considering a 2015 Buick should be pleased by this new development.
